High RPM wheel-spins

You guys know your stuff about drag racing and I'm a newbie to the sport.

Sometimes I like to launch onto the highway (nobody around) up to about say 65 MPH. I can really hook on the launch with Nitto NT05 tires (not drag radials on the street) if I'm careful.

However, in 1st and 2nd, once I hit about 4800 ish on the RPMs, I lose grip and free spin so I have to let up on 1st and 2nd... which sucks. 3rd through 5th I can go WOT all the way through.

What can I do about the wheel spin at high RPMs in 1st and 2nd?

I don't take it to the track since none are around and I'm alone on the highway, not street racing. But, I would like to not have to lift on 1st and 2nd.

What can I do to the 1995 Z28 so that it will hook?

I've got Hotchkis LCA, LG Torque Arm, Spohn adjustable pan-hard rod, and eibach springs for the rear. I know it is more for road racing than drag, but it is just so annoying to lift.

I'd get into a drag radial tire.. Also install LCA relocation brackets because you're lowered.

I'm on the bottom hole of the LCA Relocation brackets now... should I move the bolts to the upper hole?

Thanks for the tips on the tires. I may save up for a pair of drag radials.

I just got some gummy Nitto NT05 tires which are Extreme Street with a 200 Treadwear.

When my '95 was mostly stock, it would hook fine once it was rolling. So, I guess I don't understand what is happening. Is your car modded?

I'm currently at 35 psi on Nitto NT05 tires. I had to drop the psi from 46 at the alignment shop where they "topped off" the tires.

I'll post my mods when I get to work. Heads. Cam. Suspension. Intake. Exhaust. 380 hp at the wheels.

Here are the mods:

95 Z28/1LE - T56
Induction - Superior Automotive Ported Heads 2.02 Intake Valves, Comp Camps 446, Ported Intake Manifold, SLP CAI, K&N dual air filters, Edelbrock 58mm TB, TB Bypass, 1.6 RRs Pro Magnum, Manley Pushrods
Exhaust - Edelbrock Ceramic Coated TES Headers, Off Road Pipe, Ex. Insert Cone, Edelbrock Cat Back
Ignition - Jacob's Ultra Pack Ignition, Coil, Trigger, 8.5mm Plug Wires, Bosch +4 Plugs
Drivetrain - Hurst Short Throw Shifter, SLP Alum Driveshaft, LG Torque Arm, GM 4.10s with Eaton Posi, SLP Lightened Flywheel and HP Clutch Package
Engine - LT4 Timing Chain
Cosmetic - RK Sport Back, ported heat extractors
Suspension - Hotchkis Front Springs, Welded Sub-Frame Connectors, Hotchkis Lower Control Arms, Hotchkis Strut Tower Brace, RK Sport LCA relocation brackets, Rear weight jacks by Ground-Control with Eibach 175# springs, and Spohn Adjustable Panhard Rod, Bump Steer Tie Rod Ends by Baer, 275/40R17 Nitto NT05 tires, custom powder coated 17" wheels
Alignment Specs - Front - 1* Camber, + 4.1 Caster, 0.04* Toe.
380 RWHP/ 400 RWTQ

I'm thinking it is simple tire pressure. I adjusted them this morning to 33 PSI cold. Then checked them at work and they are at 36 PSI hot. Seems to be too much PSI for the Nitto NT05 tires.

What else could it be? I would lose grip at high RPMs before but I thought it was the Goodyear tires going away. These are new and twice as grippy and they still spin at high RPMs.

with a mod list like that im pretty sure getting a car to hook on radials wont happen.. look into the nitto dr's they grip better and last longer then most dr's.

you can try messin with air pressure i just dont think its gonna cut it.. invest in some dr's you'll love em once there nice and heated up.

Are DRs ok for daily driving? I bet the mileage life is poor. Is that my only alternative?

The mickey thompson et street radial is a good one. Really sticky, but they usually don't last as long as other drag radials. They are also hell to drive on when it's wet. The Nitto 555r's are decent and are a lot easier to drive on in slippery conditions in my opinion. Should last longer too.

My nitto dr's lasted about 18-20k. Thats with a ton of abuse. My buddy and I both have to run about 24psi on the street to keep from wearing the centers out

i would go with some Nitto DR's but even then im guessing ur still gonna have traction issues if ur putting 380 hp to the wheels

I'd strongly advise against DR's for daily driving.

NT555R's aren't the best for traction but they are the best in rain and will last the longest out of all drag radials.

MT's would be best, but not really ideal for a street tire. For the street i woiuld go Nitto.

A 275mm Nitto will not hook 380rwhp in first gear or on the 1-2 shift in a 6 speed car. He needs overkill. He needs a M/T Drag Radial. Yes they wear out quick. Yes we're burning more fuel than a stock engine, blah blah... Yes it's louder than stock.
