also quick question. is it a good idea to rev the engine alot with the clutch down and try and start from 2nd or 3rd gear? will that help my starting speed any?
please share any info you want. anything is appreciated. thanks guys.

Launching in 2nd or 3rd gear will fry your clutch. Do not try it. Experimentation will be required to find the exact RPM in 1st gear that will turn the tires without bogging the engine. Feathering the throttle from that point until you find the hook point will produce the best times.
There are several do's and don'ts that are connected with drag strip participation. Before taking your car to the staging lanes, make sure that you've checked out the turn-offs so that you know which direction you need to go at the end of the track to get back to the pits. I suggest that you also go to the starting line area ahead of time and carefully watch other cars as they're pulled forward from the staging lanes to the waterbox and then as they approach the staging beams.
When you've seen how things are done, get into line, STAY WITH YOUR CAR as you're waiting for your line to move. Decide on the best burnout procedure for your car's tires and suspension. After the burnout, move forward very carefully as you approach the beams. Light the pre-stage bulb, roll forward slowly until the full-stage bulb is lit. At the point that you have lit the second bulb, be ready to go.
Have a good time.
