HELP cant get car to hook
HELP cant get car to hook
ok i have the car in sig, w/nitto 555r drag radials, i took it to the track tonite and was very disapointed, i lost a tenth over regular street tires! is there some secerate to getting these things to hook? for those with this tire, how much of a burnout do you do before your run? wat psi? i ran mine at 18.5 i was runing between 2.2 and 2.4 60ft times, i was hoping for at least a 1.8 or less. and btw it was probably 85-90 degrees today at englishtown and very humid, i thought the temp would help even more
Re: HELP cant get car to hook for s***
well my first question is, what type of trans do you have? Because if your looking to dead hook with an m6 and a 10 bolt, your asking for trouble.
What kind of 60ft times where you getting with the nitto?
The way i do it is to hold the car at about 1200 rpm and slightly slip the clutch out of the hole. I dont really get all the way into it until i get out of first. I used this technique with a 4.10 gear and bald 18 inch low profile tires and i cut 2.1 60fts. If you just mash the gas in first, your not gonna go anywhere. The trick is learning how to launch these cars with just the right amount of wheel spin because like i said, dead hooking on a 10 bolt with m6 is not an option.

Re: HELP cant get car to hook
sorry i thought it was in my sig, its a a4 so im not as worried about the 10 bolt, the 60 ft with the 555r was 2.2 - 2.4, it was the same without them, i dont think its me thats making them spin, as on my last run i eased it out till about 25mph and floored it and they spun, so i deffinatly think its preparing for the run thats the problem
Re: HELP cant get car to hook
Try raising the pressure. I hope you didn't just go out and try 18 psi right off the bat. If so, that's a no-no with a new tire combo. Normally people run 32 on the street. Start at 26 or so and work your way down. I ran 26 all the time in my street tires and hit 2.0s all day long. You gotta find what the sweet spot is. Too much air means not enough tread is hitting the ground. Not enough air means the tire is probably folding and causing you more harm than good. Good luck in finding the proper psi for good hooking.
Re: HELP cant get car to hook
I was pulling 2.2 60s on nearly bald street tires. Since you have an auto get some M/T DRs and the 60s will drop. I pulled a 1.98 just changing to those tires with 2.73 gears and stock stall dead hooking with ~20-25psi in the tires.
And another idea if you have a stock stall which I guess you do, launch off idle, don't stall it up any. I've always ran quicker when doing this.

Re: HELP cant get car to hook
lol the 555r is a drag radial just like the M/T but it is a little more streetable, but i should still b able to pull 1.6 60 ft times on them. and for these tires the general consensus on this board seems to b 20-25psi for the street or else the tire will wear funny if u put more, and 18 on the track. the problem must be that i didnt heat them up enough, i didnt do very big burnouts because i didnt want to beat on the tires that much, and i guessed it would still hook ok, but i guess thats y i got drag radials and i might as well just go all out with them

First, go to the track when they have cars running slicks so they do a better job with track prep. Second, try to follow a car with slicks so you can line up in their tracks. Avoid any shiny spots on the track. Do not follow a front wheel drive vehicle. Many drivers of front drive vehicles go through the water box, burn their front tires, and allow the rear wheels to drag water up to the line so the person behind them has a crappy surface. If a track is busy running huindreds of street cars the starter usually doesn't bother to dry it off unless he sees what is perceived to be a "real" race car coming up.
Unhook your front sway bar to enhance weight transfer. Use a full tank of gas. Put 40-45 pounds in the front tires, put 20 pounds in the drag radials. Launch off idle to 1200 rpms and see what happens.
On the burnout count to 4-5 and then roll forward while still spinning to minimize your tires picking up track debris. Always stage in the same spot.
You need to quantify the results of any change you may make so only make one change each run until you know exactly what you are doing. If you spin, do not go and try the same thing again because you will spin again unless you make a change.
Most likley you will be playing with tire pressure. If 20 pounds doesn't work try 18. If 18 doesn't work try 16. If 16 doesn't work try 22. If 22 doesn't work try 24, and so on...
If the track sucks there is nothing you can do so either live with it or go home.
These are just general things to try. Ask other racers who are hooking up what they are doing and many times they will try to help figure out what the problem is with your situation.

Re: HELP cant get car to hook
i know that the 555r isnt as sticky as mickey thompsons, but they should still be pulling 60 ft times way way lower then 2.2, and if you cant get them to hook in a v6 then either you have a very very powerfull v6 or your probably doing the same thing wrong that i did lol im thinking that the reason i couldnt get them to stick after reading lots of old threads is that i didnt burn out enough, the guys with these tires seem to say that they need to be realy hot to stick good, most of my burnouts were realy only big enough to clean the tires off. and i go to englishtown, so the track surface is probably better kept then many smaller tracks. guess we will see in 2 weeks when i go for another test and tune nite
Re: HELP cant get car to hook
I said a full tank of gas. There are twoways to deal with this, one is to spin, changing one thing at a time until you hook, and the other is to hook, and change one thing at a time to go quicker. I prefer to hook because it is generally easier to quantify results through a timeslip than from the butt-o-meter.
I actually always run with a full tank, that way I know exactly how much weight is in the car every time.
