Gains from a 2800 to 3600 stall?

Would any of you have any experience from moving up to a higher stall? I'm wondering if the costs will justify the gains as far as ets are concerned.

I moved from a TCI 2600 (flash) to a Vigilante 9.5" 3200 and ran 3 tenths faster in the 1/8 alone, which was a huge ET improvement! However, the cam (power/torque range), gears and tire heigth must all match to achieve the correct outcome. The car also needs to be able to launch (hook-up) to handle the torque multiplication factor of the higher stall converter to realize the benefit.

1997 LT1 Auto, with basically the Vigilante 3200, 3.73s, Hot Cam, Kooks and PCMforLess tuning. And a few other performance goodies.

To answer that question, a lot of info about your combo would be needed. Even if we had it, keep in mind that stall speed is only one parameter of converter performance. If you really want to optimize a converter for the 1/4m., keep in mind that it may not be very nice on the street. When I was running a TH400 in the Camaro, a 5,000 stall made the best track times, but it absolutely SUCKED ***** on the street. A 4,200 (actual stall) worked quite a bit better, though lost a tenth or so at the track. And still was no pleasure on the street.

Your best bet is to talk to one of the good converter manfacturers. Take a look at the "data sheets" they all provide, you can see what kind of info is needed to select the best converter. Even then, it often takes a couple of tries to get right. If you buy a high end converter, they will take it back and modify it at no extra charge until it is right.

Thanks guys. Rich, I was just looking for some results from people changing nothing else but their stall. Mine is street driven about 500 miles a year with a few track passes once in a while to keep up on the ET progress. In my case I think a 3600 is about as far as I want to push it as far as streetablity is concerned. Any other experiences would be very helpfull in deciding wether or not the cost justify the means.

A good convertor is every bit as important as a set of heads, cam, etc...it's the link that transfer all your power to make the car move so good one will not be cheap.

The advice you've been given so far is spot on, dont just buy a higher stall to have a higher stall, match it to the rest of the combination so it all works together. FWIW and it does'nt mean anything on your ?, but I went from a 700r4 with 2800stall to a TH350 with 3500 stall and all numbers and rpm's were identical at every spot on the race track.
