Fuel prices and testing

Whats the best price on race fuel?

I can get sunoco or Torco locally.....

The torco is $2 a gallon or more cheaper than the Sunoco....$5.60 a gal with torco in a 55.

Also should I get a specific gravity kit? I have a half drum of 112 that is 2 years old, it was sealed up but not sure if its any good, how do I test it?

I would think as long as its not gelling up you should be good I would think.

We have sunco 110 for 7.50gal in the DFW area if that helps. Its about $375 for a 55gal drum.

The old fuel is most likely junk, it might be good for your mower now maybe not good for that. I've had fuel sit for 6 months and its junk.

I wouldn't trust 2yo gas in a race car. No experience with Torco v. Sunoco, but $2/gal would make the Torco tempting to try.

I've been running Sunoco GT-Plus (unleaded 105). Last season it was $5.85 a gallon, this season it is around $6.95.

I have 12.2-1 compression, so I can take advantage of the 105 octane.

However, the greater expense for me is the tow vehicle gas. I get 11.5 to 13.5 MPG (typically 12.2) towing with my 2001 Suburban, so that gets expensive real quick with out-of-town races in Texas and Kansas.

And I didn't even get one full pass......I'm just ready to give up. First points race is this week, car is not right, I'm waiting on injectors now....so oh well. I just can't win

Yeah, the gas thing isn't helping. I am lucky - it's ~120 miles round trip to my "local" track. So, I use about 11 gallons, but with tolls, entry fee, fuel for the car and generator, a burger or two, etc. I figure on about ~$175/5 passes in consumables if I am runing nitrous and ~$150 w/o the joy jusice.

If The track was closer it would really help alot for me, I hate it when you go to the track and people drive their cars there or live right down the street

I really wanted to run in a class.....but that sure won't happen now.

Put it in smaller containers and freeze it then pour the gasoline out. Then you can at least burn it in something.

My local NHRA track (Thunder Valley, Noble OK) is only 17 miles (34 round-trip) from my house. And most of my races are there at the local track, so I'm really fortunate to be that close.

However, I also typically go to about ten out-of-town races each season and the tow vehicle gas for those races really run-up my gas bill.

Earlier this year, a friend of mine towed down to San Antonio, Texas (from Oklahoma City) for an IHRA division event and blew-up his engine on the first pass down the track. That trip (tow vehicle diesel, entry fees, hotel and food) cost him well over $1,000.00 and not even one elimination round in the event. Ouch!

I sure hope you didn’t spin a rod bearing in your riding mower, a “good riding mower” is almost as important as a good drag car!

When I’m not drag racing, I’m out on my riding mower cutting the grass on my acreage. It’s like my second sport for me. Here is a photo of my mower!

Not trying to get political, but this got me thinking. It's too bad (well, not really) that we AREN'T in Iraq for the oil. Be great to have a million bbl/day of looted crude to play with!

I am old enough to remember "gas wars" and filling up with 19.9 cent/gal gas. They used to sell "Sunoco 110" at the pump at every Sunoco station - same as Sunoco's current base race gas for about 30 cents a gallon!!! I had two cars back then. A VW Beetle and a Dodge with a 383. Damn Dodge got about 6mpg and was not really very quick (high 14's) and must have polluted like 1000 cars do in total now. I don't remember for sure, but I don't remember even sponsored pros running the times I run in my race car now, week after week with no muss, no fuss in a car that could be reproduced for less then $20,000. So, you take the bad with the good I guess.

Happy racing!

Rich

I feel lucky, the local track is 8 miles from my house, Norwalk is 100 miles away, Quaker City is 45 miles away. I've driven 8 and 9 second cars (1/4 mile) to the track, raced, then drove home.
