fitting 28 inch slick with no alterations???
From my experience, it's not possible. My 27" Hoosier QTP's required trimming the lip of the fender well at the rear to allow for tire growth. Without trimming, it was nearly an "interference fit". A 28" would require that as a minimum. If you stuck with a tire with a 10" tread like the M/T 28x10.5x15 you might avoid rolling the lip though. The best chance for doing this would be a 9" rim with a 6.5-7" BS.

It depends on how wide you want to go. I used to use MT ET Drag 28x9 on a 10" rim and 5.5" backspace. The 28x9 is really 27.3" tall so I had no problems.
I'm currently using Hoosier 29x9 on the same rims with a few fender modifications. I'd like to go to 29x10 but that would mean a lot of inner fender modifications. If I use rims with less offset (pushed out further) I wouldn't have inner fender clearance problems but risk having to cut the outer fenders.
Third and fourth gens don't have a huge wheel well for large tires unlike older vehicles. With the unibody design the rear "frame rails" are right at the edge of the inner fender making it almost impossible to even mini-tub the car.

I have the MT ET Drags on my car 28x10.5x15 and the only modification I did were to hammer in the inner fender well a bit and grind some of the jounce off. Everything is unnoticeable with the tires on so if your not wanting to do it because of the looks no one will ever know. Also I am running 15x10 Draglites with 7.5 backspacing. The trick is the tire will want to hit on the rear bumper cover at the bottom. To clear this you can either A) take the plastic pin that holds the bumper cover closest to the tire out and take some bungee cords and strap it back as close to the fender as possible (which is what I did) or B) take the plastic tab out as above and make a bracket that pushes the fender outward a bit. This will give the clearance needed as we did it with a buddy of mine's car and I will be doing it as well when my car goes back to the strip. It is easy just take a small piece of metal about 2 inches long and drill a couple of holes in it. You can bolt the metal piece where the plastic tab was and bolt it to the fender where the plastic tab went. This way if you ever want to go back to the stock look or run smaller tires you just take the metal piece out and you dont have any other modifications to fix on the bumper cover.

A while back I bought a set of 15x8 Pro Stars with a 4in backspacing with 28x10.5 ET Drags from a member of the board. They fit fine on my car. No caliper grinding, no fender well beating. At higher speeds it did rub the back bumper cover just a tad, not enough for me to worry about.

Not enough for me to worry about. It just rubbed the paint off a bit. A lot of ppl dont bother with cutting the rear bumper. It doesnt hurt the tire. I was looking at the HorsePower Store's (RIP) Blue and checkerd Formula one day at the local track and noticed even they didnt bother cutting the back bumper cover. It over time had just rubbed through.

Re: fitting 28 inch slick with no alterations???
I'm running 28x9 Slicks (Hoosiers / Mickey's) on a 15x10 7.5 backspacing, just had to do some clearance work on the rear as mentioned above in RUFFIDLNZ posts.

28" x 12.5" x 15 ET Streets on 15" x 10" Cragar Superlite II rims with 6 1/2" offset. Fenders are flared up top to keep the tires covered. The bottoms of the fenderwells had to be cut out but I just used a hacksaw.
