Favorite Racing Slick - Post Them

I've searched and read on many boards, but what is everyone's slick of choice. There is a wide variety to choose from and I'm curious what everyones preference is and why? If you've switched brands...even better.

M/T
Hoosier
Goodyear
M&H
etc

I'm looking at picking up a set of 28x10.5 Et Drags with a stiff side wall for my trans brake car. We have very poor track prep at the local tracks, so I might switch to non stiff side wall as I've heard they are more forgiving with hard hits on slippery tracks.

I run a 28-10.50 mt et drag it works good in the 1/4

at the 1/8 track I go to a 27" radial....

I want to try a set of phoenix, lots of people recommended those to me but my m/t have worked great along with a good susp. set-up

Was running 26-11.50x16 ET streets on 16x8 factory wheels. Switched to 27-11.50x15 Hoosier QTPs on Weld 15x8s.
QTPs seem to be much more predictable and consistant but that could be the little extra sidewall that I have now.

I have a trans brake car too.

In 2005 I ran a 29.5 X 10.5 MT non stiff sidewall slick. I hooked pretty good with 1.30 to 1.35 short times but the short times just were not consistent enough for me. I checked out video's and pics of my car launching and I was crushing those tires even with 12 lbs of air in them.

A few racers recommended I try a 30" X 10.5" Goodyear stiff sidewall slick so I did. They improved my short times a couple of hundreths and I was more consistant.

Last year I tried out the Hoosier 30" X 10.5 radial drag slick and I couldn't hook worth crap. I mean it was TERRIBLE . Anyway MT came out with a 29.5 X 10.5 stiff sidewall slick and I changed to those and I hook GREAT. Best 60' of a 1.269 and my worst 60's are in the 1.28 range. It did take some major suspension adjustment over 4 seperate trips to the track to achieve those 60's.

I don't want to imply the tires improved my short times last year as I Mini tubbed, changed shocks and springs and added some power but the MT stiff sidewall definately can handle what I am putting to them.

I'll play with it a little more this year too

Never noticed a big difference between the brands I have used: M/T, Hoosier, Goodyear. Currently, I can get Hoosiers at a good price, so I am using them.

I didn't mean to imply that tires are the only component to hooking, but they are a critical part. Everyone has thier own oppinion of what is best and the benefit comes from the variance.

I have never even considered Goodyear slicks. It's likely because I have never even seen a pair run in my area. I just haven't heard much about them.

I have run drag radials and dot slicks and with the local track prep have found them to be inadequate. I don't deny that you can hook an ET Street or Radial or even a nitto (I've even broken output shafts with ET Streets) but they have limitations.

I've run Hoosier, Goodyear and MT in many different sizes. I liked how sticky the Hoosiers are but since they're so soft, they also wear out very quickly. Doing my back half project, I have a set of old, worn out Hoosiers on the car just to see how well the big tires fit. I can get any brand of tire by ordering it in but MT tires are kept in stock so that's what I normally run. They also last the longest and I'm hard on my tires doing big smoky burnouts.

I have a short race season (10-12 races a year) and I usually get 2 seasons out of a set of MT. I barely got one season from the Hoosiers and that's back when I was getting about 100 passes a season.

So if you had a weekend warrior you would run Hoosiers (stickiest) and MT Drags for competition (long lasting)? What sort of difference did the brands make in your 60s?

I could never do an equal comparison. When I changed brands it was because I had changed gear ratios, tranny, engine rpm range etc and needed a specific tire height. When MT or Goodyear didn't carry the exact tire size I wanted, I went to Hoosier.

I started 8 years ago with 3.27 gears, 700R4 tranny and 26" tall MT tires. Last year I was up to 29.5" tall tires and 4.56 gears through a powerglide. All the software programs I've tried said 4.30 gears would have been better. This winter I did a back half on my car and now have 32" tall tires but still have the 4.56 gears. The software programs say this is the best combination but I'd still like to go to 4.89 gears.

Now that I'm at the best tire size, I'll probably just stay with MT tires. My new tires are still on order. I ordered 32x14S tires for the stiffer sidewall because the car is still around 3000 pounds race weight and I don't want to run tubes. I still need to drill my new rims for rim screws.

This year I'm going with 28" x 10.5 Goodyears (#D2001 for heaver cars w/ harder compound) and I'm also changing to 4.30 gears. I hope to have a trap RPM around 6400 with this combination.

This will also be my first set of Goodyears, I've been running MTs for some time. A friend of mine went to Goodyears last year on his Super-Street (10.90) car and really likes them.

Good info. I have been totally blowing away my 27x10.5 Hoosiers. Looking at stepping up to at least 28s. I would also like it to continue to hook going into 3rd
