Drag radial vs Drag slick? could a drag slick slow you down?

Just curious before I buy, but could a drag slick somehow cause a worse 1/4 mile time compared to a drag radial? I was thinking that if your car was not powerful enough that maybe slicks would just make your car bog off the line, or since slicks are sticky would you car be fighting the tires stickyness the whole way through the race?

I know that slicks are needed for high power cars, but with what I got in my car do you guys think I can still get better 60ft and 1/4 times? Also I know to a point it is, but if I should use slicks is suspension still as important to getting those good 60ft times compared to a drag radial?

A equally hooking radial will out mile-per-hour and out ET a drag slick, due to less rolling resistance that the radial tire construction offers.

Many Stock/Superstock racers have switched to radials for the decreased rolling resistance.

Once a car sticks on launch its all about rolling resistance as stated above. The wider and stickier tires will take more hp to get you down the track. I run Hoosier QTP tires. I can hook (60' is the same) on either 27/10.5-15 or 27/11.5-15. The wider tires actually slow me down ET and MPH wise. These tires are not radials but the example shows the more tire the more power they use. By nature radials have less rolling resistance than bias ply tires and take less hp to go down the track there by making you go faster.

Get the thinnest tire you can hook with and the radial should out MPH and ET the other.
and run as much air as you can in all 4 tires too--to hook....

Arrow Hmmmm...

Be very careful that tire height/circumfrence is the same, radial vs. bias slick. This will make a huge difference if we are not comparing an apple to an apple. Tire height is a small fix for incorrect gear ratios. As stated above, ALWAYS run as much air pressure as possible in the rear tires while still hooking up. 6 pounds may look cool while in the lanes but 10-11 pounds MAY work better on the track. I never had a need to go below 10#'s on my high 10 second Trans AM. Handling is paramount.

Another little trick I used was to run the passenger tire maybe 5#'s less than the driver side (40 - 35). Why? Take some guesses here if you like. Just a little bracket racer thingie.

I run the Hoosier 30x9x15 radial slick and run not less than 16.5 psi in them cold and have low 1.4 to high 1.3 60ft times. My car is setup just like a stocker except for the engine, which isn't spec.
