Can you pass Tech with the G2 harness bar?
I'm thinking about switching to Trans Am seats with a 5 point harness attached to a G2 harness bar. Will this pass Tech Inspection? Do E.T.'s have anything to do with it? I run low 15's at Bandimere(5600') in Denver.
www.lgmotorsports.com sells a "G2 harness bar" under chassis bracing. I want it for autocrossing, but I still drag my car. That's why I wanted to know if that setup would pass tech.
Interesting design. It looks like it should pass but unless I actually saw one while working in tech I can't say since I can't really see how it's mounted. Personally it looks better than trying to mount the shoulder straps to the rear somehow.
Why not just contact them and ask if their design is NHRA/IHRA legal for a 12.0 second and slower non convertable car that wants to use a 5 point harness? A similar car can use a 4 point roll bar if wants since the roll bar isn't manditory at those speeds, door bars are not required. If they say their design is legal for tech then get a written statement from them to show a tech inspector in case someone doesn't like the design.
Tech can question the installation or modification of any aftermarket component. I know of one item. There's a tranny shield available but I can't remember for what. The rules state that you're not allowed to modify any SFI component however the manufacturer has in writing that a specific modification is allowed if required and it doesn't comprimise the SFI rating. Without the written changes allowed, a tech inspector can easily refuse the modification.
My car isn't fast enough to require a full roll cage. The rules state that a window net is required on all cars requiring a full cage. Since I don't legally need the cage but have one, I don't need the window net but have one anyway.
Since you don't legally need a roll bar or 5 point harness, as long as it's considered safe, you can pretty well do anything you want including using the G2 bar. At your speeds, a lap belt is all that's required.
Technically you don't need the helmet at that speed but most tracks have a track rule that all cars must have a helmet for track insurance purposes.

If the 5-point harness is not DOT approved and your stae has an inspection for street driving it may not pass. Also, if you have an accident on the street and are injured your insurance company will have just cause to deny a claim unless you keep your regular belts intact and are using them. In terms of drag racing, the tech inspectors will inspect the quality of work based upon what it is supposed to do.
In other words, I put a 5-point setup in my car before it was mandatory. The tech inspectors still required new belts every two years regardless if I was going fast enough to require a 5-point or not.

Oh and don't let people bug you about how slow your car may be running. Tell them to try racing in density altitude well over a mile up and see just how much their cars slow down.

My best was 15.26@93.5, but with a 2.43 60' on bald Futuras
With new tires I WILL break in to the 14's this summer. Thanks guys. Im gonna try to get ahold of LGmotorsports.
why not just spend like 150 bucks on a 4 pt cage from jegs or comp. engineering? then when you 11.9's you can just weld in the door bars and be done. IT seems like a good design, but you could have the real thing for 80 bucks less.
