Can any one tell me about the fuel you buy at the airport high comp race use ok?

Hi, I have a high compression snowmobile ( my friend wants to know if he can run it in his drag bike also) that needs around 112 to 116 race fuel, I have a airport that sell av gas or ab gas I forgot what the pump said, I was wondering if I could run this in the sled safley, I know people that do run. Thanks a lot

I dont think you can have 100% 116 Octane in the gas tank. I think it has to be a mixture of 116 and like 89 or something. I dunno

av gas is 100 octane, so i'm gonna say no unless you mix it with some c16. i ran it all the time in my old big block, but the one downside is that av gas will never show on the plugs, they'll always be white even when you really fatten it up. smells good, though.

Moving to the drag racing forum where I believe you may receive more experienced answers...

There should be at least two versions of AV gas: 100-115 octane and 100-130 octane or something like that (I can't quite remeber). I forget why there is a range instead of the single number. Maybe it RON and MON? AV gas is rated differently than automobile gas. It's for use in airplanes, airplanes that operate at elevation, and it's cold up there. There are additional antifreeze agents added to the gas that may not be desireable. AV gas also has a lower energy content than traditional race gas (BTUs). For at least one of these two reasons someone will frown on you using in your equipment. AV gas also has a lower specific gravity than race gas.

I used to run it in my blower car all the time. It was only half the drive to get compared to race gas, and cheaper. And, unless your getting race gas from a reliable source (out of a sealed drum) sometimes you don't know what your getting. People do cut fuel. At least with the AV gas you know what your getting.

You'll have to jet the carb(s) a little richer to make up for the lower specific gravity with the AV gas. I never seemed to have any problems. Only problem was switching back and fourth between the two gasses (jetting).

Well i can tell what i did, i went to my local airport Wiscasset ME. Bought aviation fuel which was low lead, 100 octane. Skeptical about putting it in my beloved f-car i ran it in the Ranger first, (truck ran awesome) Still confussied it being a ford and all. So i ran it in my girlfriends VW, ran good smelled kind of funny. So i ran it in the musclecar, couldnt tell the difference. Might have been a little bit smoother idle, sounded/was peppier i guess. I have Random Tech convertor. I didnt have any problems but neither did the little Ford.
Good luck, find a ford to experiment on. make sure low leaded at least.
(11:1) my compression.
