Air pressure on street tires?
Air pressure on street tires?
M11 is coming up!
For those of you still running on street tires, what PSI have you found works best?
I've heard that I should leave the fronts at regular pressure (35psi) and drop the rears to ~26.
Please include your tire make/model in your replies. Thanks!

Re: Air pressure on street tires?
I've tired dropping my street tire pressures down from ~30 to ~24 - 25 psi, and actually had NEGATIVE results
. I've read that with STREET tires, the opposite is necessary ... ADD air pressure to them. I've tried pumping mine up to ~35 - 36 psi in the back and actually had POSITIVE results!
May not be true for ALL street tires, but it does work for some

Re: Air pressure on street tires?
Sorry
, factory 245/50/16 Eagle RSA's, dropping air pressure DIDN'T help (60' times went for a crap
).
Current - Hankook HR402's (or something like that?!
) 245/50/16's - just a street tire - aired up to ~36 psi, worked well
. I was cutting consistant 1.9 60' times before with A4 & 4.10's
.
Even last month, same tires (except ~2 years old now and nearing the end of their life) with around ~32 psi (maybe 35 psi? I haven't checked in awhile!?
) with the T56 and 3.23 gears in the back, I cut a 2.152 60' time
. I cut a couple other 2.1 / 2.2 60's. They seem to be losing their grip though, and with the bad gearing, and the fact I'm new launching a 6-speed, I don't know how much better these tires can do at this point?

245 50 16 GCSs.
Stock a4 Formula
44 psi front to reduce rolling resistance
28-30 psi rear. Any lower and they cup and reduce traction.
Make sure and come by and introduce yourself tomorrow. Dark grey GMC shorty sporty 4x4 truck pulling a grey enclosed trailer with a bluegreen Formula with BADBIRD tags on it.

Re: Air pressure on street tires?
As mentioned above, pump up the front tires to the maximum tire rating to reduce rolling resistance. Pressure will be marked on the sidewall.
As for rear tires, a radial tire does not like low pressure. The steel sidewalls do not roll over like in a slick. Because of the stiff sidewalls, when the pressure is low, the center of the tire will lift off the pavement and you'll only have traction on the outside edges of the tread. Running a radial tire at or slightly above the recommended pressure is best.
