8.8" for F-bods

I found a page where someone fabed up an 8.8 for there f-bod and are selling them for around $1600

Could this be done cheaper and do you all think this is a good setup?

That's cheap. Even an aftermarket 12 bolt or 9" is around $2000.

You can go cheaper by using factory parts but then it defeats the purpose of changing the diff. You can beef up your 10 bolt for less than that.

that is what i want to do! i would rather have an 8.8 to save weight over a 9" or 12 bolt. but if the right deal comes along on a 12 bolt i am there!

Find a third gen Dana 44. 8.5" ring gear and it's more of a bolt-in than the 8.8 will be.

Are those hard to find? Isnt the third gen a little shorter or something? I guess it would be fine with a different offset?

Yes hard to find and if you do they'll cost just as much as a built 8.8

i got lucky and bought one for 1k complete, thats a rarity. Most people who sell them KNOW what they have and command 1200-1500 for them

i planned on buying an 8.8 but i got this deal instead

Would it be possible to cut and weld the f-body axle tubes on the 8.8" and then just run pete's Z bars and not worry about the torque arm?

They have a guy down here in Holden, LA that does the 8.8 conversion for our cars. It's like 1,500 out the door. All you supply is a 10-bolt housing and axles. Basicly he welds the axle tubes to the 8.8 housing and then fabs up a torque mount. You have the larger 8.8 gears and posi, but retain the stock axles. I'm gonna get it done when my current 10-bolt blows. Should be all I need for an auto car.

the link above for the 8.8 gets you better axles in the deal and is only $100 more.

Didn't look at the webpage. What axles are they using?

here is what is says:

For your basic rear end it is $1600 plus a $100 core charge (refundable with a usable 4th gen axle housing). This will include custom 31 spline Moser axles, an Auburn posi unit and 3"x1.5" wheel studs. You can choose any gear ratio that is available for a 8.8" rear end. We also include a solid conversion u-joint to be installed in your factory driveshaft. Of course all of the seals, bearings and races will be new. You retain your factory working ABS and your suspension is not affected, it bolts in exactly like the stock rear axle.

no because from what i understand the pete z bars STILL use the torque arm, it just isn't hooked up at the front of the tranny i think it is there to locate something. not sure but it still has to be there

Friend of mine just did the 8.8" swap in his 99 T/A. Seems to be working out for him, though he had some wheel studd issues with it, and hasn't put but maybe 150 miles on it.

IMO, for what you get, I'd spend the little bit of extra cash and just go with a 12-bolt or 9".
