6Speed And Our Rear-Ends..
6Speed And Our Rear-Ends..
I know 6speeds are much harder for our weak 10bolt because of the sudden transfer of power..
My question is how long will a 10bolt last behind a 6speed car??
I have read about many people blowing them up with Nittos!
I heard low 1.9 - high 1.8s 60foots is as far as you wanna try with a stock 10bolt with 3.23s....

It all depends on a number of variables....
1. what kinda tire..
2. what condition the track surface is in
3. how you drive the car...i.e. sidestep the clutch or slip it off the line.
4. power the car is making
I personally have blown 2 rearends on DR's..
5k clutch dumps on DR's with unimpressive 2.01 60fts.............
a Moser 9" is in the works............

Yeah, what Rich said.
Actually, does anyone remember when GMHTP first tested the LT1 F-Body car back in the day? They broke one just by driving it on a track(oval I believe). The car hit a bump and the back tires got off the ground a small amount. The wheels spun free and when they hit the ground again, it was like a neutral drop. Ring teeth go bye bye.
I would think on street tires(GS-C, Comp T/As, etc.) it would be all right. Of course, some are built a little better than others. I've had friends break theirs on their first launch. Mine lasted about 1-1/2 behind a beefed tranny and a 450hp LT1.
If nothing else, get the TA Performance cover girdle and use solid crush sleeves should you ever break this rear. It does help.

My rear end finally gave up on the street after making over 200 passes this year with drag radials, alot in the 1.8x 60ft range. I was using Richmond 4.10s but before I buy a 12-bolt I want to try out a new set of GM Motives I just got. They have 37 teeth on the ring gear instead of 41 like the richmonds and I compared them to my stock 3.42s and the teeth are so much bigger. With 37 teeth on the ring gear and 9 on the pinion they are actually 4.11s. It must be a change in design Motive came out with. However if I break this set then its 12-bolt time, besides everything has got to break eventually.
I made 15 passes earlier this year on Nitto's with the stock 3:42 rear and it held up. I just installed 4:10's and have made 12 passes all but 1 or 2 were in the 1.9 60 ft time and it's holding ok. I actually just purchased an insurance policy on the rear last night though, I picked up a complete 3:42 rear out of an 01 WS6 with only 1200 miles on it. A local speed shop here just installed a 12 bolt for a guy and they just wanted to get rid of the 10 bolt. I'm sure I'm going to need it eventually

I have GM Motive 4.10's in my car and I have over 60 passes on them.I cut most of them in the 1.7-1.8 range (a few 1.6's) and it has not blown on me yet.But I am still on the stock clutch and that might help me alittle.

BONE STOCK rear end......
Stock clutch though - slipping baddly
And only a 2.0 60ft time
These rear ends will NOT stand up to "clutch dumps" on slicks/nittos at the track.
Baby it and you might get lucky for awhile.....

2000 t/a , 400 rwhp stock 10 bolt gm 4:10 gears, leaving at 5800 rpm dumping clutch, 1.6 and some 1.5 60 ft 12.0, 115 mph 1/4 , 7.5 93mph 1/8 mile gears been in 2 years no problems still quite driving on hwy,
I've seen full bolt on LS1 cars (that went 11.90's) hold on for a full season with ET streets, and I've also seen a lightly modded LS1 pop an axle on street tires. It's all in how you drive, and whether or not you got a good rear from the factory.
