2800 stall already, upgrade to 3200 or 3400?

Tried in LT1 tech, not getting much luck there. Figured I'd post in here for some drag racer input, since that's all I really care about

*snip*

My times/mods are in my sig below. I've been thinking before I do a set of heads that I'd like to crack the 11 second mark with stock unported heads first. It'll take me a good part of the winter since to hit those times I'll need some ideal weather.

Right now I can cut low 1.7's with ease and 1.6's aren't usually a problem. After adding on the ET Streets the car seems to bog some out of the whole, even with them set at 20psi. It still cuts 1.7's, but doesn't launch as hard. Nitto's are out of the question b/c I spin too easily w/ them now.

I've got a free restall with my Vigilante and am going to step up this month. Given what I've got and my goals (remember I'll be throwing heads on it soon, I'm looking at the big picture), should I go for a 3200 (not much of a jump) or a 3400 stall?

Yea , I would those 2800's are mild nowadays, 3400 sounds good...sure to add a good 3-4 tenths

Hey Javier! How ya' doin?

Anyways, to answer your question, your best bet is to hop on a dyno and see where your torque peak is. You wanna set your stall right at it or maybe a tad bit under (100-200rpm). This way, when you launch you'll be right in the meatiest part of your power band.

My 2¢

Hey Marty, been good.. busy since purchasing a house, but getting back into the car game now that I have garage space Where/how ya been?

Anywho, looks like I got some input from two guys who went to a 3600 and are very disappointed, wishing they had stuck with a 3200, so I believe 3200 is a safe zone for me to stay in.

Ideally I would have done the dyno test to see what was up, but time is not on my side and I need to restall before August (2 years since I've had the stall, warranty/restall period about to end). I figure 3200 is a good, safe step up.

I have the 3200 in mine and I am very happy with it. I think the 3200 would be your best bet.

Also, is it 2 years after purchase that you can restall?

I have a Vig. 2800 and wish I would have gone higher. You can see my mods in the sig. My cam is a bit smaller than yours and peak torque on the rollers comes in at ~3200, so I'm thinking a 3200 stall would be much better. I still have several months left to have it re-stalled and if I can get the $$$ together to have it R&R'd that's probably what I'm going to go with. 3600 is past peak torque for my combo, so a stall that high would probably slow the car down.

Yah it's "within 2 years"

I need to pull my inspection cover off the tranny to get the details to send to PI to make sure everything is kosher before sending it in. I hope to get the tranny down either this weekend or next.

I think you will be much happier with the 3200. Good Luck and keep us updated on what kind of difference it makes.

Will do, dropping the tranny this weekend or next to get it taken care of.

I'll have some fresh track #'s coming up in a few months once it cools down.

I'm glad abou the free restall thing, May made one year for my converter, so I should still have time to get mine restalled after I switch to a bigger cam and ported heads IF necessary.

Funny, I am thinking that I might go to a 2800 Vig from my 3500 Vig but I have a TH350....

My best 60' with my 2800 stall was a 1.64. I switched to a 3200 and ran a best of 1.64. If you're going to change stalls I'd say go higher than 3200 to see any gains. Hopefully your new converter will be pretty efficient, because it can definitely lead to loss mph if it isn't.

Shon, why are you thinking about changing converters for? I considered it for a while, and actually still wonder how it would change the way mine runs going down to a 2800.

In general, you want the actual (vs. rated) stall to be just below peak torque. 2,800 is actually above peak torque for a stock LT1. But the torque curve is so flat that it works well. If it has a stock cam I doubt it will launch harder with a higher stall. You might get more bang for your buck with gears. What rear end are you running?
