Why Can't I Check Codes?

I want to bryan at pcmforless (he couldn't check my codes for some reason but he could program my computer). I went to AutoZone because my SES light has been on for awhile..figured I'd try them. He put the key in the diganostic port to jump the pins and he said it should flash for a connection before it will show the code. Didn't do anything. My car is OBDI (94 Model). My car is getting **** poor gas mileage (about 10mpg), with my airfuel guage always at the rich side. Seems as if its running in limp mode or something. How can I check for codes..any other ways?

Shorting the pins only works on 93 and earlier cars. I made the same mistake years ago, due to a rumor that said early 94 cars were able to do this, I dont believe thats true unless mayhaps they were speed density cars which might imply they are a "93 model."

Thanks for the reply. Now I don't know what to think, guess I'll try Bryan @ pcmforless again.

Autozone should have code dumpers, the paperclip trick though does not work. Buy a cable and download Freescan and you dont have to go to anyone for help.
