Where to start??
Where to start??
I have a 95 z28. obd1. Have had Brian at Pcm4less do my tunig in the past. I have a latptop and want to start doing some of it on my own.
Im looking to throw on a n2o kit, i also wana do datalogging with a scanmaster. Need to upgrade injectors, etc. Lots of reasons to have tuning capabilities.
What would you guys rec?
I know i need a cable, software, etc.

Your sig. says '95 Z28 so you're ODB1. I chose - TunerCat. Base tuner SW is $70.00 and $EE Definition file was $20.00. - Purchased an 'ODB Diagnostics' GM OBD1-USB Cable (no serial port on my PC) comes with drivers on CD for $60.00. Total $150.00 to read and edit PCM. I then use Freescan (really crude but free) and TTS DataScan (Download an 1st 20 logs are free) for logging . There are other more, and less, costly combinations out there, takes quite a bit of reading and research and you have to filter out all the OBD2 only products. A Good thing w/Tunercat is the license is not not limited to one VIN, if you have other cars you can use it anywhere, just need to purchase correct the definition files at $20.00 each.
I got a moates usb cable, and tunercats. I use freescan alot of the time to scan with, but datamaster does have its advantages. Other than that search here and read everything you can about how to tune.
ScanMaster for LT1 is a real time dash mounted type display with capabilities to view engine sensor data on the spot prior to turning off the ignition. Tunercats a PC program reads and edits the actual parameters (tables, constants, switches, speedo settings, etc) within the PCM, it does not display sensor data. TTS Datascan and Freescan, PC programs display sensor data and can provide a log file for detailed analysis of engine performance sitting at a terminal with a beverage. They are all different tools that can be used to put together a comprehensive tuning strategy, it depends on what you want to view and accomplish. Since ScanMaster uses the ALDL connection it can not be used at the same time as the other tools, but I don't foresee that as a problem as you should never run any of these tools concurrently to avoid PCM corruption.
Scanmaster will log some info, but not sure how useful that data will be. Better to log it with a laptop.

What it is good for is if you dont have your laptop in the car every day you can still see what the computer is doing. I wish there was something like the aeroforce interceptor for ob1 cars, its kind of a newer better version of a scanmaster.
thanks, guys.
I didnt know what exact purposes it serves. I do want to know whats going on at all time,s as my motor is going from mild to wild. I have n2o plans, a cam, and than want to be able to tune the car myself at the track.
I want to be able to make a run, check things out and do a little t&t to find what optimal for my setup. Than pull timing, add fuel, or whatever to correct of better my timeslips.
So its almost like a computer gauge huh?

Something like that. It's a live reading of the pcm. One of the more interesting things it does is tell you if you have KR and what your short and long term fuel adjustments are. You'll need to have a laptop and tuning programs to do what you're doing anyway, you might as well just use that.
The SM is better for everyday driving and knowing what's going on with the car than it is for tuning purposes.
