Want to invest in a scanner
Want to invest in a scanner
well my 95 TA has suddenly been raped by gremlins and im trying to find the best Scanner possible for my car, I need one of course that will hook up to my 16 pin OBDI. Any suggestions. Price is kind of a matter right now but so is quality scans. So if anyone has any suggestions I'd be open and would greatly appreciate it.
Re: Want to invest in a scanner
Two hardware scanners that come to mind are the AutoXray and the Scanmaster LT1. The AutoXray is available with an adapter plug to connect the OBD-I scanner to the OBD-II style 16-pin ALDL connector. The Scanmaster has no plug, and gets wired by connecting it to the ALDL wiring or individual pins. Actron now has a couple of scanners that work on both OBD-I and OBD-II, and they have an adapter for the 1995's.
The other alternative is scanning software, like TTS DataMaster or FreeScan, both of which can be downloaded for free (DataMaster will only work for 20 scans, then asks you to buy a license). All you would need to buy would be a cable to connect your laptop to the 16-pin connectors. AKM Electronics sells them:

Or, if you are ever going to be doing your own PCM programming, you can buy LT1_Edit software, and it comes bundled with pcmcomm scanning software. You would need the AKM cable to connect.
If you wanted to make your own adapter plug, I believe Shoebox has the info on his website.

Re: Want to invest in a scanner
If I were to go with the Autoxray, which kit should I pick up that has the cable for the 16 pin OBDI with it? Any site links? I would assume summit or somewhere like that carrys them.
Re: Want to invest in a scanner
Well I've decided for now to go with a hardware unit because I don't have a laptop currently and don't plan to spend that much for scanning devices at the moment, eventually I'd like to but I need one asap so I would like to know which autoxray kit has the 16 pin connector for OBDI cars and if you can link me to a site that sales them. Shoebox, in case you are viewing this thread, I was suggested to ask you . Any suggestions??? I will try emailing you as well.
Re: Want to invest in a scanner
Your making too big a deal out of the 95 ALDL connector. As I suggested, Shoebox has the answer.

Re: Want to invest in a scanner
Sorry its just I don't understand the electrical side of things at all very well currently and am still learning. I think I just wanna go with the 3000 for now because I only need it for my TA that is OBDI. It says they have the 95 specific cable with that kit on the site so im gonna go ahead with that one instead.
Re: Want to invest in a scanner
If you were to borrow a laptop with a serial port, or buy a very low cost laptop with a serial port off of ebay, all you would need is the ALDL cable. You can buy a solid one for $40 for your 95 at:

Download TTS Datamaster or EFILive and you will be quite happy with the scans and data logging you get. You can see screen shots of the scans on the home page at www.aldlcable.com
