(un)Usual communication problem?
Forgive me for being an idiot -- I've tried searching, but can't seem to find what I'm looking for.
I have a scanmaster, but I'm new to programming/datalogging via a computer. I just received an ALDL cable from Andrew @ AKM, and I'm having some trouble.
I've tried two computers -- a new Toshiba Qosmio (using belkin F5U409 USB/RS232 adapter), as well as an older Dell Inspiron (using standard DB9 Serial port). Both are running on Windows XP Pro. The scanmaster is disconnected, I've disabled all unused ports, and I've configured the Belkin as per AKMcables' and TTS' instructions (-buffer speed etc). Neither computer will establish communication, though the scanmaster doesn't seem to have any trouble.
----------
Funny thing is, I used Hyperterminal to test both the USB/Serial cord, as well as Andrew's ALDL converter -- both worked EXACTLY as they should. (No communication when pins 2 and 3 aren't jumpered, ALDL converter works great when connected to the cable). So, the serial adapter seems to be working up to that point.
When I run TTS' ALDL_Test program, the test PASSES when I jumper pins 2 and 3 of the standard Serial cable, but FAILS when I connect Andrew's ALDL converter. Doesn't seem to matter what port I change the Belkin to, nor what baud rate.
Why would this system work in Hyperterminal, but not ALDL_Test? Is this simply because I'm using the Belkin 409 instead of the 103 (recommended)? If so, how might this explain why the old Dell with standard DB9 Serial port fails to connect as well?
I'm clueless, and simple "directions" aren't quite so easy to come by. I plan to return this F5U409, and either order the 103 or find a PCMCIA. I'll try more troubleshooting tomorrow...
