troubles with freescan on my laptop

I've been using freescan on this laptop for about 9 months now and here recently it really started acting up. I know the problem IS NOT THE CABLE because I've flashed my PCM about 15 times today but when I use freescan, sometimes it will work initially but then after a while it will start giving me the unrecognized header message and sometimes it will pick back up and continue working after some time. Usually it will just continue to give me that message and I have to shut it down, at which point the microsoft error message comes up asking me to send an error report. The laptop is a toshiba tecra. The cable is the latest USB cable from AKM and the freescan is apparently the latest version, last updated in 1957. Can somebody here tell me how to trouble shoot this type of problem?
