Tranny programming asked differently this time!
Ok, before you get mad, here is the background:
I asked about updating the tranny program before for a fully built tranny from Frank at CPT.
Everyone said stock programming is fine. OK.
But, now I got to thinkin, does things have to change for the tranny, being that it will sit behind a 440RWHP Naturally aspirated motor?
So, taking all this into consideration, now what would you suggest?

thanks
Cody

If you're making that much power, I would think that you have a bigger cam, that would require a higher shift point. Adjust that and you'll be fine.
Re: Tranny programming asked differently this time!
Yeah, custom cam from Advanced Inductions. So, what is the formula for figuring out shift points? Like I said, I am new to this, and I want everything to play well together when the new Auto goes in this winter!

Frankly, I can't even remember what the tranny tables look like. I will try and look at them when I get home tonight. I'm not sure if there is a formula; just trial and error to get it honed in perfect.

Re: Tranny programming asked differently this time!
oh ok. So if you dont like being at 1500 at 65 mph, just adjust the shift point so it stays in 3rd until 70 or something like that? I know, rough guess, but is that the logic you use? I am just trying to see how to go about this after I install the auto tranny and new dana 60 this winter. I wanna pull her out and start driving it after minimal "messing around." But this doesn't seem to hard to do, if I got it.. if the way I explained is correct above...
Re: Tranny programming asked differently this time!
Here's what you need to do. Put the trans in, drive it like your going to drive it. and decide spcefically what you want it to do different and then ask how to change it. I think you'll find that the trans tables are going to be real close as they are. You will probably want to shift at different rpms at WOT and that is where you need to know what hp and tq numbers your engine has in order to decide when to shift at WOT.
Re: Tranny programming asked differently this time!
As explained, its completely trial and error...but it can get confusing because when you raise your shift points....you'll also have to change the downshift points as well...otherwise for example...you to shift to 4th at 45mph...now you raise that to 55....your driving down the raod at 60 in 4th gear....you slow down to 40mph and your still in 4th gear because the old downshift point was never changed...so now with the new cam your lugging at 40mpg in 4th gear when it should have downshifted.
There's also TCC lockup to factor in and a set of tables for that and the lockup release...if you are not careful, you'll have the TCC locking up at the same time you shift into 3rd or 4th gear which is not good.
When I put the LT4 in the truck, the stock Camaro settings in the PCM would not work at all in my truck with the factory truck gears....took me about 6 months of on and off tweaking to finally get it right and then I still made some minor changes every once in a while for the next 2 years after alot of daily driving and noticing some things.,.... but you should not have that much to change unless you are drastically changing the gearing in the rearend when you go with the Dana 60.
Also, there's not just mph to factor into the shiftpoints, there's TPS and if I remember correctly a table called something like "Time spent in each gear" for WOT that is used in conjunction with rpms and TPS.

holly crap. This just got overwelming. Well, looks like I will just trial and error it. once I get it in, then I guess I can have specific questions, and then I can get help changing stuff. I just want to make sure I can drive it on a stock program first off, so I have somewhere to start! Thanks guys!

In my truck..there's was one little window of mph where if I nailed the throttle it would not downshift for anything..like when jumping out in front of traffic on the highway...and I about got creamed a few times cause it wouldn't downshift and accellerate......things like that you'll discover after driving alot.
Re: Tranny programming asked differently this time!
Haha. I am hoping that doesnt happen to me, pulling out in traffic and getting creamed! lol. Well, guess we will see what happens in the spring when I pull her out of storage with a new auto!
