torque management question

My buddy has a 99 F-150 with a procharger at 10psi and he's got the SCT pro racer packager tuning software etc etc. He's read that there is something called torque management where the computer only allows 90% of your engines torque to go through the tranny in first, 70% in second, and even lower in third. Meaning he's wasting gobs of torque. Anyone ever heard of this? Whats the deal?

I think LSX cars have this also. I don't know much about it though because I'm an LTX guy.

Re: torque management question

Basically the engine management reduces the power the engine puts out to help reduce the strain on the transmission. This is very prominent in the LSx motors (especially the trucks) as the 4L60E (as we all know) is very break prone and weak. The idea was to reduce the load during initial pulling and shifting. It is most prominent in first, not the other way around. Beyond that I dont' know too much. I know it is programmable, my Tahoe's computer was programmed and had it all but removed. Made a HUGE difference.

Re: torque management question

Interesting. We read in the SCT tuning book specifically that with a lightning tranny, DO NOT turn turn off torque management because it will break. His F-150 has the same tranny as a lightning so i guess we're gonna leave it on, for now...
