Timing Advance
Timing Advance
I'm getting a lot of knock under acceleration ever since I put my cam in. So I'm thinking it might be due to too much timing advance. I hooked up a scanner to it the other day and the timing was at 41 - 44 degrees under part throttle. I thought the timing should never exceed 38 degrees at any time??
I talked to Bryan at pcmforless and he said that is where he set the timing. At WOT the timing is a 36 degrees and under partial throttle it is in the 41 - 44 range.
So I gues my questions are does this seem right or should the timing be backed up? What else should I check to fix this problem? Also, what is the stock timing set at under partial throttle?
Thanks

The stock timing tables show values of up to 44-45 deg advance for MAP readings of 30-40 kpa. It gets lower (30-40 degs advance) for the 45-75 kpa range and it will be less for the 75-100 kpa range. This is for the 400-400RPM range. The timing advance tables are divided in two: one for 400 t0 4000 rpm range and the second one for over 4000 RPM. How much timing your car will tolerate depends on many factors as the camshaft installed and the quality of the fuel, operating temp just to name a few. I can e-mail you the stock timing tables if you want to look at them.
