stick with OBDII or switch over to OBDI

i just got a turbo put on my car, and obviously i need a tune now... and need to upgrade the fuel injectors etc... I was thinking of switching over to OBDI because in the long run it will cost me less (my friend has the cables for OBDI stuff, so all i would need is a OBDI PCM) it'll end up running me like 250 or so...

only reason i didnt wanna do this was because if i ever go with a bigger stall...

i guess i'll have to keep my stall at 3 so i wont have the OBDI not shifting problem

so what do u yall think

switch over to OBDI or stick with OBDII and buy lt1_edit for 550 and spend that extra 200 bux?

The OBD2 is definitely the better PCM because of all its functions and diagnostic capabilites but I only paid like $150 to switch over to OBD1 with tunercat tuning software. At the time I thought OBD1 conversion was teh way to go but now I wish I would have waited for OBD2 programming software to be released.

I have read many posts on here that if your car is an auto, it is better to stay with OBDII. Someone who knows more needs to chime in.

I stuck with OBD2, The savings of going to OBD1 turned out to be about $125. Not worth it if you ask me.

as far as the auto tranny goes, the OBD1 pcm doesnt like stall converters but can easily be programed out.

Save $125 by going to OBD1, but then you have to extract the VIN# from the OBD1 pcm, install a OBD1 konck sensor, and fine a base tune ( if not in the PCM ) to start with.

The obd2 knock sensor works on a 100 ohms and the obd1 works on 3.9 ohms. So if you have an obd1 pcm with an obd2 knock sensor your PCM is getting the wrong signal from the knock sensor.

However, Ion @ madz28.com can edit the OBD1 PCM to work with the OBD2 knock sensor.

Re: stick with OBDII or switch over to OBDI

i like obd1, and i did the switch. the stall thing thats an easy fix, a buddy had a 4400 stall for daily driver and i got it working great for around town and at the track it was awsome.

but i read read somewhere (i think brents site) that the obd1 pcm is better for turbo applications becuase there are some issue with the maf on a obd2 with a turbo it maxes out at 500grams of air per sec. the obd1 doesnot. and now he has know problems.

im sorry im not more clear on this but read his site to find it. i dont have a link maybe someone can post it. sorry.

and to fix the knock sensor it only needs a resistor soldered on the pcm

LT1_edit 2.2 for OBD2 has a MAX MAF table that allows you to fix that issue.
