Software using USB cable

Purchased a USB-to-ODB1 cable from ALDLCable for my 1994 Z28 camaro. Have a Dell laptop running Vista and it only has USB ports. Many of the software suppliers indicate that they do not support USB connections. Did some searching and understand that either COM1 or COM2 is recommended. Anyone have experience with a software program using a USB cable on the older ODB1 interface? Please let me know. Thanks.

Searched the forum and found someone running Vista and Freescan with a USB cable, but they didn't indicated if it was OBD1. I reloaded the USB drivers for Vista and I'm going to try again. My concern is that it is assigning the USB port as COM5 - saw that some programs don't like ports above COM4. Does anyone know if Freescan will operate okay on COMM5?

I don't have Vista but my Laptop is XP and uses COM5 in Freescan. Works fine.

I also know I had to set to Interact and not just Listen under Operational mode.
