serial to parallel adapter for autotap? possible?

Hey guys.. I borrowed autotap from a friend and a newer compaq laptop from another friend for the weekend. As luck would have it my friend's laptop has no serial cable.

Will autotap work correctly if I use a serial to parallel port adapter? I heard something about 1 bit and 8 bit and was not sure if it would adapt correctly..

if it doesn't, that would suck

I have heard that some work but mine does not on my compaq. I had to move my desk top close to the window and extend the cable out the window.

It's possible, if you know how to do it. You need to, of course, buy the serial to parallel adapter, then reconfigure your LPT1 port to read at the standard RS232 serial port language. If you know a little about computers, I bet you could do it. Don't ask me how to do it in WIN, cause I only used to do it in DOS.
