rs32 or usb cable?

just wondering what you guys would use. I keep trying to contact akm cables with the question but don't receive any responses. i was just going to use a desktop computer to hook up to it until i got a lap top, but i don't know if i need a rs32 or a usb cable. i am not quite sure what the difference in what the two is, i was hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction.

What are you suing to tune? If you have tuner cat you need a RS232 cable also called a serial cable. You only need a USB cable if you dont' have a serial port.....Then you would need a USB to Serial (RS232) converter.

Re: rs32 or usb cable?

i am just going to use the freescan software to pull CEL's and the like. later on i may get lt1_edit just so i can load tunes from the tuners on this board. i am a little computer hardware illiterate, so i am not sure what each looks like or how it plugs in

i would hope the desktop i have would have both, or any laptop would have both as well as long as it was kind of newer

Re: rs32 or usb cable?

actually a older laptop tends to have a serial port, They are kind of outdated. A usb is the small flat connector used on digital cameras and sutch. A serial looks almost the same as the plug for your monitor but with less pins (only 9). I use a serial cord.. (lt1 edit and Logworks both use serial) But with a USB to serial converter, becouse I don't have a serial port.

oh, ok, i see. my computer has a serial port on it, i guess it would be advantageous to get the serial port then since more programs seem to be running it
