Recommendations on programming for 10psi 383

Hi, I'm located in the San Diego area and looking for someone to do at least the initial tune on my new motor ASAP. I want someone with extensive LT1 blower experience.

I'm presently leaning towards a mail-order tune followed by dyno sessions and repeat until satisfied. Two local buddies have had good luck with Ed Wright, and I may go that route. Steve Cole is 2-3 hours from me I think, but I'm not really thrilled with leaving the car for awhile. Obviously I would prefer a local shop with a dyno and programmer, but haven't had much luck locating one. Eventually I'll likely go the LT1 edit route (or similar) and tweak things myself, but I want the initial tune done right and I don't have time to play with the software and learn it.

The car is a 95Z with 383 (8.3:1), Vortech s-trim@ 10psi, Aftercooler, AI LT4 AFR heads/intake, 224/236-114 cam, Vig2800, SLP 1-3/4" headers, blah, blah...etc.

Any suggestions? TIA!

Also, is there a downside to running large injectors with the factory computer, say 75lb/hr low-Z (with Acceleronics box), as far as idle/low end goes? I'm in CA, so smog is a concern. Would I be dumping in excessive fuel at low levels? I intend to retain the factory computer. The largest hi-Z injector seems to be 57lb/hr and according to various injector calculators I may need more than that.

I spoke to someone at Ed Wrights shop last week and they were recommending 50lb/hr injectors and advised me to stay away from low-z injectors with the factory computer due to "too many problems", but could not offer any specifics as to what those problems were. <grain of salt>

My only foreseeable future upgrade (yeah, right!) would be to bump the S-trim to a T-trim, so it seems the 75lb/hr should be fine for that.

The only problem I've had with my 84's is starting. I had to play with a few parameters to make it start, but sometimes you still have to tip the throttle open a little. It idles around 1.2 ms pulsewidth. Anything over 1.0 ms is OK.

I'm running the 72#/hr injectors on my 396 maxed S-trim. The low-Z injectors worked great with the impedance driver. Car starts right up, no hesistation, and idle like stock. When I pulled my SC belt and ran with 0 PE with the 72#/hr, the car drives great as well. The programming was straight forward too.

I would highly recommend going to the low-Z injectors instead of trying to squeeze by with the high Z. This way you won't have to live at the line and also not have to buy multiple sets of injectors when you want to push it. Secondly, with big low-Z injectors you won't need to bump up your fuel pressure sky high, this way you can squeeze by more with the stock fuel lines. I am currently running stock fuel lines, stock fuel rails, Seimens 72#/hr injectors, Walbro 340M, Hypertech AFPR, and a Voltblaster to feed my 611rwhp safe tune.

I would contact LJ at www.acceleronics.com. Your setup is similiar to LJ when he first started out and hit his 9.9 couple of years ago (http://para.noid.org/~lj/) He did all my tuning for me and has been tuning blown LT1 for many years and still is. Also, he is setting Jeff Creech at www.carolinaautomasters.com to come here and do a group dyno tune session as well. If you can manage to have both of them tune your car that will be great. Jeff C can also do mail order tune for blown LT1 as well.

If you do get a mail order tune, I would jump on a dyno with real time WB O2 readout so that you can check it and shut it down if it goes lean or detonate. This was what we were able to do at FFP, so important for a supercharged car to see real time A/F reading.

Another option is to contact Keith at FFP (in sig), tell him that I sent you. LJ and I dyno tune my car at FFP with Keith's help. Keith does dyno tuning, but he is quite far from you.

And that's why I would never recommend that anyone purchase a tune from him.

Camaro_SS/R , What he said, I've had a similar experience, I used to run 50# injectors but it wasn't enough. I went to the 72# siemans with the Box and have had no starting problems, The car is more responsive with the Low-Z injectors. I started with a mail order tune and did a little tweaking myself and am at about 550rwhp with 5psi until I get to a wideband.

Re: Recommendations on programming for 10psi 383

Thanks all - I ended up shipping it off to Ed yesterday. If need be I guess I'll swap PCM's and tweak later. This project has been so long in the making that I don't want to take any risks and try it myself.

I repeatedly questioned the size of the injectors they recommended (50lb) and they assure me they are plenty...we'll see. I'm going to check it with a wideband and retune as needed until it's right. Worst case I'll sell them and go with the box/lo-Z injectors, and retune. I'll post the results soon hopefully....pretty much just just waiting on the injectors and O2 extenders, and need to reinstall the radiator/condensor and fill all the fluids.

Brian,

Paul mentioned your need of tuning and I'm not sure if you solved your problem or not, but here is a thread on our local board. I dug this post up just because a tuner is coming to CA. It might not apply anymore, but I remember him asking for you, and this might help.

Ahh, but some of us knows how to hack Eds OBD1 LT1 calibrations
