Programming for my OBD1 conversion....

I just got my OBD1 conversion from Bryan at PCMforless and was wondering what other accessories I needed to monitor it myself. Are you able to check...for example....you fuel mixture and crap like that? Is it worth it?

I know about the cable but which one do I get and where do I get the software?

Also I have an old laptop......a Toshiba 445CDX. I think its like a 133Mhz. Pentium 1. Will that work?

Thanks everyone........this board rocks.

yes the laptop will work.

get the molded cable from www.akmcables.com. just trust me and get the molded.

now for the software get freescan (its free) and get data master, you get 20 free trials with and then you have to by for a 100 bucks for unlimited uses. this is the best software for the obd1.

the reason i say get both is because if i want to moniter jus tthe blms, ill use freescan but if i wan tto look at knock count and knock retard. i use data master. datamaster also has a p a play feature you can rewatch the whole the whole run you just made.

this scanning software is a must if you are going to be doing tunning.

Damn 97z.....you're always saving my arss. Thanks a lot buddy.

When you say the scanning software is a must, are you reffering to the Freescan or the Datamaster or both.

Sorry for being an ID.

well... we all want our cars to be fast, but we have to keep in mine the longevity of the engine. when you tune your car you need to be able to monitor the progress you making. you dont want to run lean on one or two cylinders and burn hole in pistons in stuff. you need to be able to keep a watch on what your doing.

say you need to know if your duty cyle on the injector is to much (over 85%) then how are you going to do that with out scanning software. and if it is and you put bigger injectors in then how are you going to know if they are woking for you.

i want to be fast at the track just like the next guy. but i dont want to come home on a trailer becuase i messed up something in the tuning and and droped a piston.

like for changing shift points on my buddys car ran data master and watch where and at what prm the car was shifting and made changes and looked them over, until they were where he wanted them. and i ganuntee you with his 3500 stall that car was not a daily driver until we started tuning it. now its very drivable.

hope this helps

hope this helps. i use both freescan and datamaster.

K Vince...I know I'm an Idiot but I went to Andy's Freescan page and there is no where that I could find that had and option to interact. What is it for anyway? I have an old laptop that doesn't hook up to the internet.

Oh crap thats another thing...so I download the Freescan then I burn it onto a disc. I go to transfer it to my laptop and it wouldn't let me set-up. When I turned it off there were all kinds off colors on the screen. When I went to reboot. It says "Invalid system disk". I think I fried the damn thing. I have no clue what the hell is wrong. Just keeps getting worse.
