Post Problem reading PCM

I have tried to read my PCM twice now w/ Flash. I have the Tunercat windows version. I am new to this programming so I may be doing something wrong. The first time it went over 50% and the second time it only went about 30%. Anyone have any idea what would be causing this?

Thanks, Michael

Do you have a screen saver, time out on your hard drive, or anything trying to go into power saving mode? Shoot TC a message about this problem.

Hal,
I think the first time was due to my screen saver coming on. I set it to 20 minutes and set the hard drive to 20 minutes because I thought that may have been the cause. But, I'm not sure why I failed on the second read. I may try it again here in a little while but I had one question. I've had to reset the PCM both times now. There is no way that I can damage my PCM just by reading it is there?

Supposedly there is no way to harm it when reading. The big diffence is when your writing you flash it first to earse and thats where the harm is.

Are you using the 'flshprog' and 'flshread' programs? If so, for best results, you should do this thru a true DOS mode. Hope this helps

I'm trying to use the Windows version of Tunercat. Now I am getting an error that says cable failure.

Is there any power acc on when you are doing this? Also are you running of the battery of the laptop or are you pluged in? Also if you are pluged in, is it to through a power converter off the car. Make sure when you are reading or writing that the Laptop is pluged into the car, Make sure that there are no other programs running in the background(little icons in the bottom right corner near the clock) and NOTHING is turned on in the car. Also what OS (windows 98, windows 2000, windows ME) are you running. If you have 98 there are definitly programs running in the back ground! If you are useing 2000 you should be alright, if you are running ME -good luck you'll need it!

Andrew has said that there is no way to damage when reading, which is perfectly sensible.

If you are using a power converter I have had one that resets power after about a minute and interupted communications, very nerve wracking, it let out a BEEP and cut power for a millisecond (or whatever, laptop remained on but it did interupt my read).

Move your mouse around once a minute or so if you wish. Also, I unplug the fan relays before I read/write to save battery. If your getting cable failure either the connection to it is bad (obviously), or perhaps in Windows something is interfering, you are using the serial port not USB right? If you have Infrared port, disable it, etc etc

Turn the laptop on and bring up the flash program but don't do anything. Just left is sit for 10 minutes and see if some power saver comes on. Some laptops have power saving controls in the system bios. If it fails bring up the bios and look for some kind of power saver still on.

I think that my problem was a combination of things. I thing the infrared port, Palm Pilot software, and a few other things may have been causing it. I haven't had a chance to try it again but has anyone ran Tunercat w/ Windows ME succesfully?

Yes, using a Win9x boot disk. Palm stuff is loaded in Windows, so that shouldn't be a problem, IR should be disabled in CMOS setup at bootup, DEL, F1, F2, are usually how you get in, but many laptops use exotic key combinations to get into CMOS to avoid people mucking it up on thier own by hitting just a single key.
