PCM on 96 Z28

About 2 months ago, I had my check engine light come on. The code was
P0601. I erased the code and limited my driving for fear the PCM would fail and the engine would quit.
My questions are: Since I erased the code, it has not returned. Will the PCM completely fail and shut down the engine?
Can I replace the PCM myself, or does it need to be flashed or programmed?
Can I program it myself?

Re: PCM on 96 Z28

Let's move this off the "Appearance" forum, and to "Computer Diagnostics......" forum.

The P0601 code is caused by a checksum error in the PCM. If you cleared the code, and it didn't come back, it could have been an isolated incident. If the problem is still there, the PCM has a problem. Erasing the code doesn't destroy anything. Its the problem the code in indicating that may mean there's a problem.

The PCM runs a checksum test once on each power up. If you've started the car several times since you cleared the code, it probably indicates an intermittent or non-recurring error.
