Angry OBD1 Hades

Howdy All,
Got the dreaded SES light for about a minute this morning. I've restarted twice since and drove the same distance once without getting it again. I tried using the ecm jumper method and came up with nothing but a Check Gages light after ABS and everything self tested, the cooling fans came and stayed on along with something whiny near the throttle body. A while back I bought the cheap 35 dollar code scanner, got the same results. Then I bought a 150 dollar scan tool and still got the same results. I've been told that 94's were a transition year for the 2 OBDs and they will not "hold" codes. How am I supposed to check for codes if this is true? I left the jumper in for a good 10 minutes. Was that not long enough? The whiny thing near the throttle body even stopped.
Please Help,
Gabe

Oh that is just too funny and I had to respond!

Anywho, I am absolutely certain that 95's and 94's had the same PCM and the codes are kept (well, certain ones).

I use my Datamaster to access mine.

What is this $150 gizmo?

I've got the service manual and it says 12 pin obd1, which i do have the 12 pin connector. If you dig deep enough into the book you can find the exact same pin lay out. Haynes says I have obd1 or 2, it's not sure. Chilton's says I have obd1. Did they make some with 12 pin connectors but instead stuck obd2 in them?
If I remember correctly, the 150 dollar job was an Accel Scan Tool, got it at Autozone, they didn't want to refund for it and went out to the car and hooked up to see it for themselves.
If I'm not mistaken from all the reading I've been doing, obd2 has a 16 pin connector.

The theory is all 95's are OBDII w/ an OBD1 connector. All 96+ are OBD2 w/ OBD2 connector. I have heard that some end of the year 94's got the 95 treatment. My 94 was made early in the year and got OBD1 w/ OBD1 connector.

Ya know, I've really been leaning toward the 95 treatment. It was built in late (Oct) 94.
What type of scanner do you use if you have a hybrid system like this? Also, how would I know for sure if this is what I have?

This is incorrect. All 95 F-bodies came with OBD1 PCMs but an OBD2 16 pin ALDL connector. Even those in California with the dual-cat exhaust are OBD1, despite rumors that some are OBD2. All 94 F-bodies came with OBD1 PCMs and OBD1 12 pin ALDL connectors. The codes cannot be retrieved unless a TECH1 tool or other scanners (laptops with Freescan or DataMaster, or other scanner tools that are too numerous to list). The jumper technique of using a PCM ground connection (such as a paper clip in the 2 rightmost pins) will not work on ANY 94 F-body. 93 F-bodies, however, this will work, as well as any GM vehicle pre-1994. All vehicles made 96 and above are OBD2 with an OBD2 connector.
