OBD-I vs OBD-II Knock Module Compatibility
OBD-I vs OBD-II Knock Module Compatibility
I know that when doing an OBD-I swap into an OBD-II car you're supposed to change the Knock Sensor or use a resistor. But what about the Knock Module? The reason I ask is because I'm helping a buddy do an OBD-I swap into his 1996 LT1 Camaro, but the PCM that he got (16188051) didn't have a Knock Module in it, someone took it out. I know the original Knock Module that comes in that PCM is (16177700), but rather than try to source that specific module, can we just use the Knock Module (16214661) from his OBD-II PCM? I've searched but haven't seen any threads discussing this specific situation.
Re: OBD-I vs OBD-II Knock Module Compatibility
I am not aware of any differences in knock modules used in LT1s. There was a different knock module for the LT4 that was slightly less sensitive because of the difference in rockers between the engines.
Re: OBD-I vs OBD-II Knock Module Compatibility
The 94/95 part # (16177700) is different than the 96/97 part # (16214661). Perhaps that allows it to work with the resistance of the different knock sensors. JUST A GUESS. There are different knock module part #’s for the Impala and Corvette LT1’s as well. I would try and match the knock module to the sensor resistance and the PCM. . If you are using a 94/95 PCM, use the 94/95 low resistance (4.4K) sensor and find a 16177700 knock module. Seem to be available on eBay and Amazon for $70. Don't know if those are GM used or new Chinese crap.
