OBD I pcm rev limit?

Ok, from 99.9% of what I've read/heard/etc the highest we can spin our motors with an OBD I pcm is ~7,000 rpm, right?

Well I have a friend that claims he is shifting at 7,600 and has his rev limit set at 7,800 in his MSD Digital 6. Of course his tach doesn't go that high, nor would it be accurate. However the dyno he has been on showed 7,800 rpm and he claims he has hit the rev limter as well.

He has an Ed Wright programmed pcm with a built 355 solid roller motor. Could or DID Ed write more code or whatever to allow the pcm to go farther then ~7,000 rpm?

I tried to rev past 7,000 rpm in my OBD I pcm Camaro and it felt like it wouldn't go any farther (valve float? I dunno, I've got a solid roller cam...) I used to have a 7,000 rpm pill in my MSD and have my rev limit set at 9,996 in the pcm.

Another thing... With the 7,000 rpm pill in the MSD the engine would shut off if I hit the rev limiter. Like when holding onto a gear too long while leaving long black marks up onramps, etc.

PS: He might have an OBD II, but I'm more worried about OBD I since that is what I'm running.

Thanks for any and all info you can provide.

Hi Brian,

I saw this the other day in the LT1 Edit archive. They were discussing about "revving above 7K rpm"

link - http://www.ls1edit.com/pipermail/lt1...06/thread.html

hope that help

I wouldn't take an OBDI pcm past a scan tool reported 7000 rpm.
There are simply no timing tables for those rpms and I doubt Ed Wright squeezed in a few more cells in there. The OBDII pcm also goes up to 7000 rpm.

The MSD imposed rev limiter cuts spark as opposed to fuel. (stock rev limiter)
