My ALDL cable won't work correctly!

I got the cable and tried to install the software for the driver. I downloaded 3 free programs and none will show real data. I think it did it but when i hook it to the car and turn the key and the fuel pump cames on the thing starts listings tons of numbers that mean nothing. The dash board look and all other sensors show nothing. What do i do and is there any way to know if the think is working correctly? Do i have to run the car or just have it so the pump will come on? It says "After driver installation, open your windows system control panel and choose the hardware device manager. Expand the ports (com & lpt) item and look at the properties for the usb serial port and note which com port has been assigned to the unit. You will need to tell the diagnostic software package you select which com port is being used by the aldl-usb." What does this mean and is there an easy way to do this?

The key only needs to be in the run position. You have to tell the software how to make the connection. If you are using a serial port than more than likely you are on COM1.

I have tried to get to the usb port to tell it to use a specific port but can't find the right place to look. The instructions don't work so how do you get the usb ports up to view?

I think i solved it. The directions don't read right so i just need to go to the systems icon and get to the usb port.

It usually will work after 4 or 5 times of trying. It will close the program for some reason so i go reopen it and after some time it works so you figure.
