Question Are Manual and Automatic steering colums interchangeable?

i have a 97 ws6 w/ a 383 stroked lt1 any way the car ran when i pulled it into my shop and installed the roll cage a/f o2 guage, water temp , and a tach. then to install the cage i dropped the gas tank out and put in the walborro 255 fuel pump and re-installed the tank. i then built fuel pressure and started the car the car ran for about 10 seconds and shut off. The steering column and tumbler were broken so to start the car you had to push the rods to engauge the key to start the car. I then hooked the battery charger to it and started it and it would run and shut off. so i pulled the A/F guage signal wire and the car started and ran but i had to gass it a lil. then when i figured outt how to work the broken coulumn to start the car it would run but i would blow the PCM to batt fuse and shut off and only crank. so after about 7 fueses the car would start adn run fine so i left everything the way it was. when i went to work the next day i figured i would start the car and move it out from the shop and it would only crank. so i bought a steering column off ebay that wasent broken and i think it was from a automatic car becsue it doesnt have thje button on the tumber like the original one i took out but everything plugged in to the new one. Now the car doesnt turn over and i dont hear the fuel pump enguaging but everything goes on its like the clutch isnt engauged and the car wont let it crank. and i lookd at the saftey switch and it looks wired to the brake switch but u allways needed the clutch in to turn over . i have no idea i NEED some HELP? i am a B tech and an mater autobody tech and i jst cant figure it out ANY IDEAS? thanks - mike

did you transfer the ign cylinder, if not you are screwing up the pass lock/vats, the key with the new steering column doesnt have the same pellot in the key

1. do the vats bypass, measure the resistance of your original key for the car and get a resister of the same value and cut and solder it to the wires under the dash,, they are in a orange insulation, this is the easiest to do

or

2. have the pcm re-programmed with vats removed

or

3. transfer the original ign cylinder and wiring to the new column

or

4. go to your gm dealer and have a new key made with the old pellot resistance but the new key cut/code
