Question Laptop requirements for Tunercat/LT1 Edit?

I want to grab a laptop and use either Tunercat or LT1 Edit. I think I will go with Tunercat because it's cheaper and, as I understand, it is the same as Lt1 Edit. Just a different user interface. If I am wrong or there is additional info I should have on that please fill me in.

Back to the reason I made this thread.

Will either of those run on a P100 machine?
24MB RAM is the minimum I need, correct?
How much HD space do these programs take up?

Any additional information is welcome.

You can run it on a P100 absolutely, I have it on a 486 -25MHz SLC IBM laptop. It is SLOOOOOOOOOOW for logging, to the tune of about 1 capture per second ONLY, but it programs/reads great.

I dont know what kind of deal your getting on the laptop, but for better logging plan on an upgrade. HOWEVER, if your laptop is an MMC-1 processor (I believe it is) you can get a P200/P233 on eBay fairly cheaply if your not afraid of opening up the laptop.

I have used a P233 and it was whup *** with Win98 for logging, it was only about 2 captures per second less than my P2-266 MHz laptop, I think I was getting 5/6 on my P233, and about 7/8 on my P2.

The programs take up hardly any space at all, my Win95 486 laptop has a 116MB HDD and 12MB RAM.

You may see 3-4 FPS which actually is pretty good, so if your getting a deal and it has a good battery, go for it. I would also suggest buying a power inverter for your cig lighter, this way you dont run the battery down logging.

ive never heard of an MMC-1 processor ....waht is thaT???
the P100 he is referencing is either a Pentium Pro 100 Mhz or a Pentium 486 100 Mhz processor. If you meant a processor with MMX technology then the P100 does not have it. MMX was only availible in all pentium 2 CPU's and a few select P1 processors ( after the P2 with MMX was released)

I have been thinking hte same " WHAT LAPTOP TO BUY" as I am ordering LT1_edit. I have looked at ebay and other online places to buy laptops and they seem rediculous. A Pentium 2 333 MMX laptop goes for $400 ! who would pay $400 for a slow outdated laptop??? So I looked at Pentium 3 650Mhz laptops and they are over $600 ! HOw rediculous. So I opted to buy a laptop from Best Buy. they have a Pentium Celeron 1.8 Ghz with 256MB ddr and Nvidia Geoforce 4 mx "MOBIL" gpu and DVD/CDRW drive for $999 !

This laptop will oout run the $650 P3 650Mhz by FAR. AS a network admin and small business IIS designer I would recomend spending the xtra cash and get a NEW laptop. You are wasting your money overpaying for a used slow out of date problem prone laptop.

by thats just MY OPinion

LOL !! sorry I guess I didnt think about that.

Well what is your budget for a laptop ? I would recomend getting faster than the minimum requirments of the software. You can find a decent PII 233 MMX on ebay for about $300. Or if you want cheaper you can get a Pentium Pro 166MMX laptop for about $200
I would get one with MMX technology ( even tho its old as my grandpa) it has better performance then a laptop of the same speed without MMX ( this only applies the Pentium pro 166Mhz as was the only P1 avail. with MMX, all P2's were made with MMX) Altho this performance margine is considered extremely small in todays market. Just remember, at speeds this slow your CAR has a faster CPU !! hehehhe just messin with ya!

http://search.ebay.com/search/search...combine=y&st=2

try looking here, just becareful you dont buy one that doenst have a battery or is missing this or that. Alot of these older laptops on Ebay are missing parts and batteries dont work causeing u to spend an xtra $100 for a working battery.

you can also try www.dellauction.com They run a little more expensive than ebay, however they have all their parts and have been checked by dell to be in full working order.

Good luck, if you want my opinion on something online you wish to buy post the link here and ill take a look and see if anything weird pops up.

I was hoping to keep it around $100. Because I will still have to spend $70 on Tunercat and then another $95 on the cable.

Here are a few laptops on ebay that I am watching. What are your opinions on them?

1st link seems good, however Windows ME is not the most stable operating system, but for what you plan on using it for probably wont be a problem at all.

2nd link, the Laptop does not have a CD-rom drive. This may cause a problem when trying to install tunercat if it comes on a cd. However if tunercat comes on 1.44 floppy's then that wont be an issue. If tuner cat comes on floppy disks to install I would chose this one over the 1st one, as MMX cpu will be more reliable with windows ME operating system, not to mention your Data Logging will be almost double what the 1st one could do.

3rd link, This one does not incluse an operating system, which for someone like me would be good because I despise Windows ME. And could choose 98, 2000, or XP to install. If you have a copy of windows 98 in your possesion I would say this would be my pick of the 3. If you dont have a copy of windows 98 or ME ( ewww yuck) or windows 2000 ( i would recomend win 2K or 98 SE on this one) then I would pass this one by. A copy of any of these operating systems cost atleast $100

Well today I ventured into Best Buy to get my laptop, Now I didnt soley buy this laptop for just my car, but ffor other uses as well.
LAPTOPS are damn expensive!!!! I walked in thinking a 1.8Ghz celeron cpu for $999....great deal on a laptop if you ask me....WELL....after looking and some salesman persuasion I left with a Pentium 4 2.4 Ghz Toshiba for $1600 !!!!! dayum, plus hte 3 year parts and labor service contract and tax ! I left with $1960 out of pockeT!! ...Atleast Ill get $250 back from the mail in rebate, but still...ouch,,,and i still have to order LT1_edit!

$1,960, damn!

I do have the Win98SE CD from my home PC so I would just take Win ME off that 1st one anyway cuz I don't care for ME either

I believe Tunercat comes on a floppy. I will have to ask them.

Thanks for your help.

Personally, I use an old 120MHz Pentium with 72 MB of RAM. The RAM is more important than the processor is for logging, since the rapid reading of information takes up more RAM than it does CPU cycles to process. I was reading at 100ms delay with Freescan, which was more than enough. I believe that is 10 frames a second. Tunercat really doesn't take muct to run, and neither does Datamaster or Freescan, so I'd just look for an old used laptop on ebay around 100-150 Mhz. You can usually get one for less than 100 (I just purchased another one, only spent $80 on one with 40MB of RAM and a 120Mhz Pentium).

8mb RAM is the memory, I doubt that would work at all. 800MB is the hard drive space. That thing has to be an old Intel 486 66MHz CPU, not even a Pentium CPU......Thats pushing your luck...and gawd awfully slow

1st link looks good, definetly better to get a PII CPU over the old Pentium 1's, they just run Win98 better than P1's. Also remember do not expect the battery to work, there is a 50/50 chance it wont. If the previous owners replaced the battery when it died ( usually corporate issued laptops are maintained like this) then it may work. If it sat in closet for a year or two...the battery isnt going to hold a charge. Now what you can do is get an DC power converter for it for about $80 for your car or find a direct fit cig lighter charger for it on ebay somewhere instead of buying a new batt. for $150.

2nd link, cant beat a corprate leased laptop, those are usually maintained and have a better chance of an operating battery...and its a faster CPU (which you will appreciate with win98)

3rd link.. no floppy drive included

4th link.. Nice one, garunteed battery, 400Mhz

5th link...Thumps up

6th link...good, but battery probably doesnt work considering in the picture with it on its pluged into the wall operating off the AC power ( you can see the little green light on the AC power box)

7th link...no floppy drive included

8th link...Looks good, however they say it comes with Windows ME but the picture shows it booting windows 2000....maybe they reistalled WinME to sell it or maybe they dont know what they are talking about. Either case no big deal since you have a copy of win98. ( i would leave win2k on it if it came with it)

Good luck, whatever you dont have that " man I spent too much money" feeling when your done like I do. I could have bought a Ram-Air hood for my car with the xtra money I spent.....Well Iguess I would have spent it regardless.

8MB is way too little RAM to be doing logging. You definitely need to get up to 32MB at a minimum, recommend over 64MB for good performance. The hard drive space doesn't matter, it has nothing to do with the performance of the system.
