Laptop Connection Problems

I had my friend bring over his laptop one time to help me load up a tune from madz28.com. The only problem was the ony thing my cable would hook up too is my old school HP desktop...his laptop did not have a port for the cable...this is not an AKM cable but from another company that I was referred to. Cable works great but like I said only worked on my old desktop or any other desktop. Any ideas on if I can hook a connector of some sort up to it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is it a usb cable? And has it asked you to install a sort of a driver, cause if it has, I found I had to install the driver for it to connect. And you have an obd1 right? Are you using his C.A.T.S program?

Re: Laptop Connection Problems

Since you said it would only work with an old desktop I am assuming it has serial DB9 ports. And most newer Laptops do not. A possible solution is to use an RS-232 to USB convertor, I just bought one on Ebay for cheap. It should be here this weekend, and I can report how well it works with Datamaster and Tunercats.

Good luck

Re: Laptop Connection Problems

A PCMCIA card would probably work as well.
Probably more stable for most software out there but not sure how easy it is to find one with a serial port on it now.

Re: Laptop Connection Problems

PCMCIA card is the way to go.
It will work with all our programs
and provides a true com port.
The USB adapters work with some programs but not others.
They're easy to find on ebay and have come down in price
since I bought one for 50.00 plus shipping.
And in the last 6 months even desktops don't come with com ports anymore.
