key cylinder problem

i need a new key dylinder, the security light is on all the time and every couple days it wont start...my question is do i need new keys? or new module under the dash? or just a key cylinder? and it matched to my keys?

basically need to know if there is a resistor in the key cylinder and the key or jsut the key matched to under the dash....
also if anyone knows what they run that would be nice also...

The resistance is in the key. Called a key pellet. The switch has contacts that use the resistance to allow the theft detterent module to engage the starter circuit.

Rather than go through the replacement of the switch, why don't you simply bypass the sensor for the key with the same value resistor and be done with the problem.

Schematic here:

Bypass here:

Remember if you want to bypass the switch you do not need to cut the wires. Just unplug the orange overwrapped wires and put the proper value resistor in the connector going to the TDM.

The steering column has to come out. Shoebox has the procedure for it.

You could just have a worn out key. Have you tried other keys?
