"incorrect message sent"...

I finally got me a cheap laptop... old Dell latitude CP. Uploaded Windows XP, Tunercat and Datamaster on it. I have made a few 10+ min logs with datamaster so far and have not had any problems. Today I finally received my floppy drive for it so I went out to see if I could get the thing to read my PCM. Not to my surprise all I could get was an "incorrect message sent" error before the read even began. I tried this with the CATS version 3.10 and 3.11. I have had so much bad luck with friends laptops that I stuck with my desktop for flashing the PCM... finally I just figured maybe id get lucky and have one that actually worked. yeah right. Does anybody know what I could try? Im gonna screw around with the bios and see if I can turn off security and power down crap but I really think im wasting my time. Since I can get datamaster to work flawlessly, this problem of mine must be with the laptop and not the cable. Thats about all I know. Thanks

Com port settings correct in Tuner? Correct definition file? Was the pcm in the car when you reflashed it with your desktop? Also I'm trying to understand what recieving the floppy drive has to do with reading your pcm?Still have the obd1 conversion? I have 2 laptops here that work perfect in my car that you can try if get over this way. I'm using CATS 2.0, waiting on updates now.

My advice: Lose windows XP for one. Load 98 if you can get your hands on it. Shut off all power saving garb and screen saver. And last but not least, DO NOT rule out poor cable connections. Read my response to the "home build cable" post. And yes, first make sure your laptop and tunercat is looking at the same comm port.

I am in the middle of reformatting my laptop for a diff OS... all i have on hand unfortunately is ME. Ill give that a try till I can find 98. I hate paying for outdated software so my hunt is on unless somebody wants to sell me a full install 98 SE for cheap.
