I have used a USB to SERIAL adapter for over a year now with no problems, and I know many who use this without a problem.
THE ONLY PROBLEM with them are when people try to CHEAP OUT and get cheap ones. The CHEAP ones DO NOT WORK or WORK PARTIALLY.
get a name brand like Belkin or Keyspan and u wont have problems
