Been working on getting my car smogged, so had to tweak the computer a little here and there to reduce the CO and NOx levels. Each time my tuner re-loads a new program, the OBD monitors have to reset. Does anyone know how long..in miles driven or time engine is running...to have all the non-continuous monitors ready? I can't pass smog until at least 3 of the monitors are "ready".

Here's the list of non-continous monitors that are supported in my car:

catalyst
secondary AIR system
O2
O2 heater
EGR

I've driving for a few days now, but don't want to take it back into the smog place until I know the monitor are ready, or I'll fail SES self test. Probably put on about 150 miles so far...what determines when the monitors are ready?

I put about two hundred miles on my car and about 4 days of driving and my car finally posted ready statuses for all of the monitors and I passed the emissions test.

 

Wow I am having the same problem with my 97 SS with FLP long tubes/cats and rear o2 sims. I have AIR pump and EGR still in place

just failed emissions today for

Catalytic converters- Not Ready
Oxygen sensors- Not ready
EGR Systems -Not ready
The car does not throw any codes and drives fine. Just put a new battery in from it sitting over the winter and have driven the car 3-4 times since but short trips only. Maybe 70 miles total. I will do a search but, all I have to do is drive the car a good distance and everything will be ready? The next time I go. Thanks for your help.

Try some drive cycles, don't have to follow it EXACTLY, but helps most people. www.obdii.com/drivecycle.html

 

Thanks for the link....will try it later. Wasn't sure if it was miles or drive time, but sounds like it's more about running the right conditions to exercise the monitors.

Of course, since failing smog twice, a dark cloud has been following me around:

1. Failed smog once.
2. Tweaked computer which lowered CO and HC but not enough(damn Random Tech cats do nothing...by the way!!!)
3. Failed smog again.
4. Re-installed stock ypipe/cats, which fixed CO and HC, but NOx still high.
5. Tweaked computer again to back off timing to reduce HC and also planning to test/replace EGR system. This will fix all readings, but SES not ready because of monitors.

All this re-tuning of course resets the monitors, so just need to drive around more right...well...

6. On Tuesday found that front passenger tire has a leak.
7. Tire shops won't patch leak, because tires are down to wear marks.
8. Ordered 4 new tires...but can't install until Friday.

So, need to drive to reset monitors, but can't drive because tire is flat. Not planning to install the "donut" just to drive cycle.

Don't you just love it on our cars when one things goes bad...other things follow.

Let's hope this drive cycle procedure works, because I have a smog appointment for Saturday. I'll run the cycle after installing tires on Friday.

Who is doing your tuning? With proper tuning, you shouldn't need to wait more than a couple drive cycles.

 

He's a local tuner in the Bay Area. I'm sure it's fine by now. In CA, we need at least 3 monitors ready...I usually have 2 and waiting for the 3rd. All the stuff that I listed above happened within a 5 day span. I basically re-tuned everyday and this is all during while I'm at work, so don't get much mileage on the car, except from work to home. After getting tires today, I'm just gonna cruise around some...probable do a few cycles that the link showed. The only thing in the procedure that I don't do is that decelerating from 55 down to 20 without braking or shift.
