how in depth can an ecm be programmed?

if i put a 96 3.8 liter supercharged motor in a 74' porsche can the computer that goes with it be programed with a different tranny and run correctly?

the motor is out of a buick riviera... and i assume i could'nt get the motor to run without the ecm...

oh and would i have to remove the vats system or must i use everything from the donor car?

thanks guys....

I believe those ECMS require you to reburn a chip for it, also you would have to know what to burn to the chip i doubt there is a protocol out there for public usage on a buick riviera, but i could be wrong.
