tech2 seems like one of the best diagnostic tools around, but no one has made any PC based programs to copy it. why is this? is there something special about it a PC can't do?

EASE comes close to it as does Auto Tap. But nothing is going to be as good as the TECH2 at least in my opinion. But then I own my own TECH2 and all of its associated software so I am a bit biased

Actually EASE does all GM model years and other manufacturers as well. Some people swear by it and some say its a GM recommended tools or a GM sponsored tool, however I totally disagree. You won't see EASE in any GM dealership, GM requires that their dealerships have the TECH2 Flash scan tool as their standard tool. EASE isn't even mentioned within any GM documentation. The only way EASE would be in a GM dealership is if a technician owns it and has it on his personal PC. However most techs relie on the dealership to supply specialized tools such as scan tools.

In the next year the TECH2 will be replaced by the new TECH3 which is due for release from Vetronix sometime this year. So that means that there will be many used and very servicable TECH2's to come on the market in the next few months.

With the TIS-2000 software to interface to the TECH2 for stored data downloads into a PC, one can analyze an amount of datalogging sessions done with a TECH2 during a test drive. The same TIS-2000 software is also part of the GM SPS programming system that allows the TECH2 to flash program any GM PCM, VCM or BCM control modules. The TECH2 also does a myriad of other tests that most generic aftermarket scan tools can't do.

For a good ODB2 scanner take a look at OBD-2.com

Alex Peper's software is good on all 96+ up vehicles regardless of make that use OBD2.

I bought his tri-con system and have used on Ford's, Chevy's and Honda's.

So is this just a scan tool or does it actually allow editing like the tech 2 does?

No it is just a scan tool. I am not sure what you meant by "editing"? The Tech2 does not allow editing of any calibration. It does offer certain tests that manipulates outputs to the various devices, injector tests, key fob programming and other tests. It also programs PCMs, VCMs, and any other GM programmable device, but it only programs what is provided by GM. One cannot edit a GM calibration and install it via the TECH2.

It appears that Alexs scan tool is a nice alternative to Auto Tap or EASE and is cheaper than either package and does what 99% of most people would want for a PC Based scan tool.

The AutoTap EFILive software comes pretty close, and perhaps exceeds the Tech2 in its ability to "custom program". Appears though, that the custom programming will only work with the AT EFILive software connected. And its a "PCM only" tool, not something that can be expanded to ABS, SIR and BCM modules. Limited to the LS1 family of engines.

ive thought about this for a while now, i would think someone could make a program to simulate the tech 2, i can get the software that the tech 2 runs on, its just stored on a removable pcmia card in the tech 2 and is updated via the internet at the dealer,

if someone had the software that runs the tech 2 couldnt they make a tech 2 simulator?
