FAST: WhiteRacing Harness and FIRE !!!

Warning ... long ... jump to part 2 for the fire ..

Part I: FAST Install

Pictures to follow ...

For construction and overall quality I'd have to give the WhiteRacing PCB harness a 6. Being wrapped in electrical tape and lack of sealed enclosure really detracts from the overwise well constructed harness. For ease of installation it gets a 10. First I cut the stock 2bar MAP sensor connection and wired in the connector supplied by WhiteRacing. Next I removed the stock PCM and stock harness. Joining the stock ECM plugs to the WhiteRacing PCB was a breese. The wideband O2 sensor plugs right in, as well as replacing the stock passenger side header. Finally I ran the data cable to the interior of the car.

Immediately I was able to see the FAST controller as well as have complete read of all factory guages. THe only oddity was the speedo. This is a buffered signal for which I already have a Dakota Digital SGI-5 to resolve the issue. My understanding is that all stock sensors not going to the FAST are passed through to the guage. Initially we were not getting readout on the FAST digital dashboard. Only a few moments into tuning did live data start appearing. Idle quickly came up as well as some initial part throttle tuning. We'll be able to road tune a bit later this week.

Overall I'd give the WhiteRacing PCB insterface an 8/10 and recommend it to others. Install was a snap and we got to tuning right away, but I question the product's durrability given the lack of solid case. My solution will be to disassemble the stock PCM and use that as acase.

Part II: FIRE !!! FIRE !!! FIRE !!!

My guess is that there was too much timing in the program we started with. After a few moments of hoding RPM at 1500 did I walk up front to see a glowing set of headers and little flame under the aftercooler. The heat shielding used on the spark plugs around the center primaries, from which my darwinian *** installed, had a thin strip of velcro. It was fine of the past 500 miles I've driven the car. Well, that stuff quickly melted. dripped on the header and lit a flame. It was right under the aftercooler too. The flame was really small but I worried about it flashing to a larger area. The plug wires have a little black on them but are otherwise soft and supple, looks like the nomex did the job.

Since Tom's (Byrne) unfortunate incident way back when, I have carried a fire extinguisher in the car. It fits nicely in the TA's passenger side cup holder. Upon shouting fire the tuner handed it to me and that baking power **** went flying everywhere. The fire quickly went out but do I ever have a mess under the hood, though it could be MUCH worse.

I would advise anyone to do the following ...

A) Be smarter than me
B) Carry a fire extinguisher in the car.

I'll be picking up a replacement in the morning. Off to Meijer. I'm looking for one of those hand held steam sprayers as seen on TV or something to quickly clean that crap up.

Best,
Jon
