To everyone that has fried their PCM with a USB cable.
I have one question for you:
Was the computer you where using equipped with USB 2.0? Standard USB does not offer nearly as much power as 2.0 does. Im new to this i may be totally far off but i just thought maybe it could be the cause.

Yes, IBM dual 2000mhz core 2gb DDR RAM with USB 2.0 has problems with USB. I didnt fry a PCM because I never programmed a PCM with it because I could not get it to consistently read/log with it. By consistently I mean it messed up 2 times over 15 logs. That is NO GOOD since one of those 15 logs could have been a program event... then POOF!
USB 2.0 is 500 mA per host port.
A typical serial adapter pulls 10-20 mA.
This. The only difference between USB 1.1 and 2.0 is the speed. The reason for the problems with USB is having to convert the communications protocols and the lag this can induce. If the PCM doesn't see the info it is suppose to at within the specified timeframe, it kills the programming, resulting in a dead PCM.
