does anyone know how the speedometer works? *Prize for help*
I need to have a working speedometer in my car (rules don't say it has to be accurate).
Does the speedometer work off of Hertz? I know it goes through the PCM, but I don't have one of those anymore, so that's not an option. My transmission doesn't have any provisions for a speedo either, so I was planning on using one of the old ABS sensors in the front hubs for a Hertz signal..

I'd say the easiest way to get a close speedo signal would be to use a DRAC out of an older S series truck. It is a small box that converts the signal from a toothed wheel (your ABS sensor) to a signal that the speedo can use. There are formulas on the internet on how to calculate corrections. It took me about 3 tries to get the speedo within 1 mph.
1. Get a DRAC (I have one if you need it) and install a set of DIP switches where the jumpers go. This will make it fast and easy to calibrate the speedo.
2. Run a set of wires (twist them together, about 1 twist per inch, for outside noise rejection) to the front of the car. They need to be inside where the DRAC will mount (passenger kick is a good place so you can catch the speedo wire to the speedo from the PCM)
3. Hook up your ground and switched ignition and the 2 signal wires from the ABS sensor. Hook up the speedo wire and go out and calibrate.
Cheap and easy.

Now we're getting somewhere
Yes, I want that DRAC box that you have. I don't care about accuracy at all, it just needs to work. does the DRAC box have pin jumpers, or is it a solder type deal?

They solder in. That is why you go to Radio Shack and buy a set of DIP switches and solder them in. That way you can just flip the switch on or off to speed the calibration.

This is a cool way of getting it done.

Here is the calculator. Simply put in the number of teeth your reluctor ring has and put the gear ratio as 1:1 since you are not going through the gears and that should get the jumper settings pretty close.

Jeff, thanks but too pricey.
Ryan, how much for your DRAC, and would you solder the dip switches in?
I need it asap
thanks!

I can solder the DIP switches in. Let me go out in the garage and find a DRAC and I'll let you know when I can have it on the way. How does $20 shipped for the DRAC with the switches in it sound?
