Do I need the MAF?

so would the engine run fine if i just left the MAF off the car? Would there be any disadvantages to runing without it, gas milage, horsepower? What would the best option be? Mine will continue running when i unplug it but i get the SES light for a week or two. I just knocked out my honey comb from the MAF tonite. Just wondering please post some advice.

Re: Do I need the MAF?

You need the maf for street driving. Without it, your mileage and possibly performance will suffer. The maf is used to fine tune the engine during part throttle conditions and basically "fuels" the engine with it's input to the pcm.
It the maf is disconnected, the map sensor will run the engine alone on tables preset by gm in the pcm.

I'm also wondering the same.. could you run several datamaster logs through VEMaster EE to automatically fine tune the VE tables for use in SD mode?

Re: Do I need the MAF?

I've been running !MAF for years now. I ported and descreened my MAF back in the day before I knew better, the results weren't good for me, and instead of paying for a new MAF I just ran speed density.

In order to do it "right" you need to do much more extensive tuning.

All things being equal, speed density is more accurate when it comes to transients and MAF is more accurate for steady state. From what I understand GM now uses the MAF during cruise and speed density during acceleration with the LSx PCM's for these reasons (haven't verified this).

My car seems to perform fantastic for what's done and the fuel economy astonishes me (refer to sig)

Is this a worthy mod? For most cars, probably not if your MAF is functioning properly. If it isn't and you don't mind spending lots of time tuning those VE tables, give it a try before buying an MAF.

Re: Do I need the MAF?

Not to hijack the thread but:

If my car will start fine, idles to a 1000-1200, then slowly starts to die until I give it some gas at which point it revs up normally and then slowly dies, does this sound like a MAF problem?
