Post Do I HAVE to have my pcm programed with a cam

OK... after fixin a problem with the opti the car still runs like ****. I just put ported heads and a new cam in it. I was told that my stock programing would work, but I just would not see full benefits of the mods until a reprogram. I know people do this with the HC and the 305,but my cam is bigger. (224/236 .503/.521 114) Do I have to have tha reprograming done to drive it. The car misses (and sometimes backfires) badly when I drive it. It sounds like the ignition to me, but then I thought about the computer being out of wack. Also does the computer control the fuel pressure. I am still running stock fuel pressure. I am lost here.

That does sound like an ignition problem. A reprogram would only be for too rich or lean but cruising should not be a problem.

Mine always needs the connecters on the opti messed with once or twice to get a good connection there. If you have an aftermarket box take if off and see what that does.

I have seen others with similar problems on the lt1 board. Do a search on it with like "missing" or "backfire". Who did the cam install?

I'm going to say that you have a cracked plug, bad wire, arcing wires, or maybe even the timing chain a tooth off. It does not sound like programming. Your programming will pick you up a lot of power and eliminate cam surge but if you're missing than its most likely ignition.

Your car will run fine without a reprogram w/ a cam swap. May not run the best - but it will run.

Your problem is going to be mechanical or electrical.

Check your valve adjustment and your opti'spark installation.

Its really hard to troubleshoot a problem of this sort over the internet. Its like diagnosing a heart problem while you are talking to the doctor on the phone.

If your still having this problem - include as many details as possible.

Well, just giving ya my 2 cents here. I had a consistent problem with stumbling, bogging, and rough riding at all rpms. Although I did have my whole engine replaced and an aftermarket cam (lunati) installed with no programming. Car ran 50% faster than ever until it started the bogging, stumbling thing again once I drove it for 5 min. So I don't think your computer would need to be reprogrammed for your problem, although there is a first for everything right? Good luck
