Code search

Re: Code search
There are some codes that won't turn the SES light on. Since it is a V6, I think it is OBDII, so if you have a code reader or scan tool, you should be able to pull them.
Sounds as if a good tune up is in order.

Re: Code search
It has an OBD II hook up, but it's an OBD I. Not getting a reading on my scan tool. Says in the booklet not able to read that kinda engine. If I got a different scan tool, would it be able to give me codes with out check engine light on?

Re: Code search
If it's a 3.8, it should be OBDII. Is there power to the port? Check cig lighter fuse, as the two are on the same circuit. Below is a link to GM Tech Service showing the 3.8 to be OBDII.

Re: Code search
All fuses are good. Power point works fine. Just wanna find out why car is running so rough. Oil seemed like it was never changed. Drained it, ran mystery in twice and drained it. New fresh oil, filter, plugs, wires, coil packs are good, new fuel filter, compresson fine. Pop coming from air intake and tapping noise coming from somewhere. Can't pinpoint it with a stethiscope. Could it be timing chain? A sensor? Help Please!

Re: Code search
Ok. Some how I pulled 32 codes. I hooked up scan tool like shoebox showed. typed in 1995 year. then told me to put in 8th digit in vin number. put in S. did not work. Read booklet the scan tool came with and it said sometime it will ask for 4th digit of vin number, but it still asked for 8th digit, but I put in the 4th digit, and it pulled 32 codes. But some of the code numbers match the list of codes, and most don't. Even says (DTC 98 Acb Modifier out of limits for cylinder 8), but it's a 6 cylinder 3.4 Camaro. How can I have pulled these codes? Are they the right ones? Wrong ones?........ Confused.

Re: Code search
The engine code is the 8th position in the VIN. "S" is the 3.4L V6.
The generic code lists supplied with, or built into scanners are notoriously risky to use. You need a code list specifically for your car. Chiltons shows DTC 98 on the 93-95 3.4L to be "Invalid PCM Program".
Did you get 32 different codes, or did you get some multiple recurrences of the same code?
I'd try a different scanner, if you can access one.

Re: Code search
32 different codes. I Believe. 1-32 as I push dtc button. Example; Code 1...DTC 22, (has no description). Code 2... DTC 31, Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor Low. Code 3...DTC 64, Pedal Position 3 Input Low. Code 4...DTC 61, Turbo (Compressor) Boost Pressure LowTurbo Boost Sensor Low. Code 5...DTC 59, Transmission Temperature Low. Code 6...DTC 58, Transmission Temperature High. And so on. All the way to 32 codes. I can write them all down if it helps.

Re: Code search
I'd get a different scan tool, but I have no idea which one would work. And I can't take the car somewhere unless I would tow it there, and back. It runs real bad. Can I hook it up to my laptop with a program installed?

Re: Code search
If you want to invest in another scan tool, go to Amazon and look for the Autoxray 5000 or 6000 models. Both do OBDI and II, and come with all the proper cables you need. I have the 5000 model and it will do the '95 OBDI with the OBDII port.
