Code P0420 bank one cat converter is driver side?

Want to know if this is driver side cat and if so can I just replace it with a Magnoflow direct-fit and clear tthe code or will it clear itself and will it pass smog in Cali?

Bank 1 is indeed the driver side. I installed a magnaflow on my 97 and it fit well but did not have the provision for the after cat O2. I had to weld a bung in and add the sensor. The pipe for the later models may have the provision for the downstream o2, but I would check before installing. The cel will go out when it is satifsied with the new cat

First make sure its a problem with the cat, and not a problem with the O2 sensor. Swap the after-cat sensors side-to-side. If the code follows the sensor to the passenger side (P0430) its an O2 sensor problem. If the code stays on the driver's side, its a cat problem or a wiring problem.

If its a cat, you may also want to check to see if the cat is still covered by the emissions warranty, or if there has been a recall.
